premier kick returner! injury prone…. major multifaceted offensive threat! arguably without a true position… hitting his prime! would require a 4th rounder to keep... on an easy to dump contract that we can more than afford! thats probably worth more than his actual value... theres arguably as much reason to part ways with him as there is to keep him, so its hard to tell whats done with him in the next 5 weeks. Harvins got talent but how replaceable is his skill set? is he worth more than a potential young contributor in the 4th round? Will he be a jet in 2015?
Is there a chance we can cut him, preserve our 4th round pick and re sign him after. Saints did that to us with vilma.
Yeah well Vilma had incentive to do that because he was jilted and went to a good team and wanted to stay. Harvin has no such reason and could go anywhere if we cut him, he doesn't even know our HC or GM.
That is what I am hoping we do he is only a 6 mil a yr player not a 10. Another team bids we get him for 7 good for me. But this regime didn't trade for him call me when he gets a 1000 yards receiving He is gone
Not necessarily gone, they can eat the salary cap hit this year or they can offer him upfront money to restructure, releasing him means he is gone and probably to Arizona
8th highest cap hit and many players will be cut above him this offseason 5th highest cash hit (dez, d thomas, Cobb maclin and maybe Crabtree will see more than 10 mil in cash in 2015 since their signing bonuses should be higher than that) For Harvin's production he is not worth it, he is a huge overpay. though you make a good point, you don't have to cut him right away....you can wait til after the draft......or when you need some cash to sign a free agent which won't happen this year as we are so far under. So it's not like it's a pressing need, since he has $0 guaranteed. they can wait til the the final 53 to force him on a paycut on the 2015 season. A restructure would be stupid. Though it will be a 4th rnd pick if he is on the team March 10th. If he is not it will only be a 6th round pick. This regime didn't trade for him so my guess he is gone.
He's not durable enough to be more than a luxury piece in the offense. If we were on the brink of making a playoff run with a franchise QB I would want him.
I initially though he'd be gone, but then Chan Gailey happened. Gailey, and excellent OC, was 2 years retired when the Jets (of all teams) came calling. Chan only had to look at the roster for 1.5 seconds before laying out his demands for taking the job: 1) He gets to keep Percy Harvin, one of the most dynamic offensive talents around. 2) Chan get paid $2M per year. In that order.
Good call, Gailey could be the factor that makes them rethink Percy. I don't buy the cap hit this year but maybe a restructure?
As far as releasing then resigning him, it makes sense. Say we cut him and he's worth $6M (not $10m) but some asshole team offers him $7M. We counter offer with $7.5M, get to keep him at a $2.5M savings, and keep our 4th round pick. So if we want him, OF COURSE we will cut and resign him
Money. Right now, he's on our books for $10M and a 4th round draft pick, if we don't cut him. But let's say with his injury history and his issues getting along with his teammates, his 'new' value is closer to 5-6 million, not 10. We want him, but we cut him. The most other teams will offer him is closer to the 5-6M mark. Then all we got to do is top that by whatever amount and whammo, he's back on the Jets for a lot less than $10M AND we get to keep our 4th.
Just because the teams is cleaning house upstairs don't mean you throw available talent out the window, guy. Harvin is a killer peripheral player and if the rumors about Gailey are true then we need players like Harvin that can take bubble screens and pick plays through the flat to expose zone coverage. You don't just throw the baby with the bathwater for a clean start, even if the baby sometimes has migraines. I think restructuring would be a great plan for this guy.
He also doesn't have the kind of history that is going to have teams wanting to break open the piggy bank for him.
Arizona is set to lose Fitzgerald and he has a reason to want to beat a division rival, if the Jets let him test FA I would bet wet that he goes his happy ass to the west.
I totally disagree. He's injury prone, doesn't have a real position, and is nowhere near the level of player his salary says he is. When combined with the 4th round pick they will lose, there's no way he should be kept. They could sign Spillers or draft a rookie that would have about the same skills as Harvin.
Yeah but the reason Arizona might lose Fitz is....salary, the same problem they'd have by overpaying Harvin. Like Faux just said, there's not much there for Harvin to demand huge jack. Shit, his value may be closer to 4-5M at this point. My earlier point was is that NO ONE is paying him the 10m he's on our books for, so if we want him, then cut him and just beat out any other bid. We'd save millions doing so.
With that kind of money... i'd rather get a more consistent player like Cobb. Hope Cooper falls to us that would make this break up easy. But as of right now he's the 3rd highest paid WR in football.. that's a no no. I can see him at best giving us 5-7 good games.. the others he would spend injured or invisible.
