The Debate Club threads have been a fixture of the prestigious BS Forum for a few months now, but this begs the question- should they continue to exist? This is a question for the people. You, the common forum dweller, get to cast your vote and perhaps change the course of BS Forum History. Voters are strongly encouraged to sound off on the reason for their vote in the comments below.
I like 'em Counselor. "How old the earth?" and "Seatbelts yay or nay?" were good, but I respectfully must add that I found 'em a a tad dry. A polite request: jazz up the subject matter.
Agreed. Abortion has been done to death and brings out the worst in people. Age of the Earth, there's no real debate on, although it's entertaining when someone tries to deny science . Seat belts was cool because you don't hear about that, usually. Please no gun control or political party debates. Anythng else that provokes thought and intelligent discussion is cool, IMO. I favor science debates myself, but I have a feeling many would be bored by that.
Human cloning would be a good serious topic. Best sports movie. Marx Brothers vs Three Stooges. Lunch meat tier list.
Full disclosure: the abortion debate club thread (which was the first one) was initially meant to be a one-off thing. I saw the gun debates in other threads and sort of put out a challenge to the board to see if they could discuss abortion in a civil way. Shockingly, the discourse was civil, so I decided to make more threads on different topics. I agree about no gun debate threads - mostly because there are already 500 of them here already. And I won't do political party debates either, because it's boring/pointless and would just rile people up. That's not the point of the threads, they're supposed to be fun. Also, I want offbeat / interesting topics. But they need to be about things where there's likely to be a split of opinions.. I have to keep in mind that most of us are from the northeast and therefore we all agree that the earth is round and not 6,000 years old.
