Interesting article about the success of the Jets D when blitzing 4, and then 5+, along with the success of Palmer when facing 4 rushers or 5+ http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/15767/cincy-might-consider-riot-gear-for-jets-d
Nice numbers. You'd have to think the Bengals will try to compensate for this, but it does look like a recipe for success.
Getting to Carson Palmer is definitely the key on defense. It's easy to get in his head - he is petrified of the pass rush.
The problem is that they don't have any reliable pass catcher other than ocho cinco. The Jets match up very well.
Carson, Brittle Bones, Palmer knows that being made of glass he has to stay away from the pass rush so when you blitz 4 or 5 people he throws the ball aimlessly away.
the key of course is stopping benson on 1st and 2nd down and getting palmer into 3rd and 8,9,10. remember earlier in the season when we couldn't stop the run and never had a chance to send in the band of lunatics? it was frustrating. we may see more run blitzes in the beginning trying to drop benson behind the line forcing palmer into 3rd and lunatics.
You may have to watch games a few more times to see this so listen in. There is a misconception that the JETS blitz and don't get to the QB. That is a misnomer because many of the times the JETS blitz is to Occupy players. IOW, If a QB has only 2 guys to throw it to and not 4 it makes it more difficult. What teams normally do to combat this (other than hot route) is have the back block then go out and dump off. If you rewatch the games you'll see many times the JETS blitzer just "Occupy" the player and not let him go out. That my friends is the secret of this defense. But people like Fatcessa who doesn't watch our games put so much into the Sack that he over looks pressure and what this team is actually doing on defense.
While pressure is nice, there's no denying that this team would like more sacks. Sacks (usually) produce negative yardage, limiting what the other team can call on their next down. Would you rather pressure Peyton Manning or sack his ass?
Absolutely, which is why our ability to man up receivers with Lito/Lowery and Revis makes us such a dangerous defense
If the Jets can stop Benson, pressure Palmer and not turn the ball over, they have a very good chance to win. The first two aren't such a tall order for us. The third... we'll see.
