CB Vontae Davis in round 1. It's been boring here so I thought I'd take a shot at what might happen on draft day. Yes, there's lot of things that can happen between now and then, but looking at what's transpired here's what might go down. The Jets sign Scott and Leonhard. That pretty much takes care of the defense except for CB and DE. The way the Ravens and Steelers played defense the most critical players are the linebackers, then the secondary, then the DL. The Jets have Jenkins and Ellis on the defensive line and could definitely use another defensive end, but with pressure from the DEs less of a concern in the 3-4, the bigger need is another shutdown corner. If he's available Davis becomes the man. If not there are few other corners the Jets could take here. This will obviously be impacted by what players are available on draft day. If Stafford, Sanchez or Macklin were to drop the Jets would have an interesting choice. But barring the unexpected, I think CB, and Davis in particular is the way the Jets go. What's your take?
Don't know much about him. We picked Revis at #14 when he came out, does this kid have the potential to be atleast almost as good as Revis?
i dont know to much about davis either but i watched some clips of him on youtube and liked what i saw. hes a tough safety and looked like he can light some guys up. i think he would fit in with ryans physical defensive scheme
What about Aaron Curry from Wake? I heard he's a beast at Inside LB and blew away everyone at the combine with his skills and game speed, I Wouldn't mind him if he's there at 17.
He definitely has the talent, the off the field issues are a slight concern apparently but I don't see that as much of an issue with Ryan as it was with Mangini. I could see CB being our first pick but I really think we are and should look to improve the O. I think Ryan is confident enough to believe that his presence alone is going to improve the D plus the addition of most likely Leonhard and Scott and the D is close to being good enough to win a championship with. I don't think CB is as big of a need as most on here do, the secondary will improve if the pass rush improves, which it should with a more aggresive scheme. The O on the other hand is a disaster, we have no idea who our Qb is, we don't have a true #1 WR or very much speed, the RBs lack depth and now we need a starter on the line. I think the Jets will select with their first pick BPA between QB, RB, WR, OL.
Ryan's defensive scheme really requires two good cover CB's, and VD fits well. He has all the tools, but he's a bit like his brother, something of a spoiled little kid. He was benched in the Illinois game because they were getting blown out and he stopped trying... he quit on the field, and got pulled. LTJF's scoutng report is right on the money. Davis can also lay the lumber. he is a big hitter when his head is in the game. Sounds like his brother, Vernon, TE, SF, doesn't he? This pick would make me very happy in the first. I think it's a no brainer if he's still on the board at 17. He may not be, in which case, the JETS could go in seveal different directions. IF we don't get Scott, an LB is an equally important position to fill early, but this draft has far more OLB's than 3-4 ILB's. Other than Stafford, I don't like anyof the QB's. This draft is deep in quality WR prospects, but we have so many other pressing needs and a log jam at WR already. I am very worried about the O line and only having two RB's on the roster. Even if Moore somehow re-signs, the O line has no depth across all five positions. Davis, despite his baggage would be a great pick. I hope it breaks that way.
Lmao yeah i just saw Mcshay on ESPN and he said after the combine nfl teams consider curry not just a top 10 pick and the best LB in the draft but the best Defensive player overall.
vontae Davis is my pick as well, this early on. BUT I do think that DL is a higher priority in a 3-4, 4-3, steeler, jet, mangini, ryan D than CB, so if there is a player out there on the DL who might help, then he'll be the pick. at 17 there are just soooo many wild cards. Can you imagine a secondary of Rhodes, Revis AND a pure man corner?! Sick.
I think there's a pretty good chance that Sanchez will be there on the 17 alongside Freeman. The choice there would be Sanchez, who has Drew Brees-like qualities. Freeman is going to look like another Joe Flacco but he really isn't and he'd be a bad pick in that slot. An interesting move would be to trade down to the late 20's picking up a couple of picks lower down and take Freeman. Sanchez won't drop that far because unless the Lions take Stafford on the 1 they are guaranteed to gobble him up on the 20.
If i had the choice between signing a man cover CB in FA and drafting Laurinaitis at #17 or drafting a CB and signing B. Scott for a ton of mone i'd probably go with the first option... but i guess i'm the only one in here that would do that
Aaron Curry is regarded as the best inside LB available and some consider him top 5 overall prospect talent wise. he wont be around at 17 as far as the draft goes i think its CB or LB 1st rd without a question, unless Rex Ryan likes Tyson Jackson. he fills immediate depth with potential to be a long time starter. some people dont like him but he fills a need and will prolly go anywhere from 15-25. only offensive players i wouldnt be surprised to see them take at 17 would be Jeremy Maclin or Knowshon Moreno (despite a slow 40 we all know he plays faster)
Anything but a QB, RB, TE, Center or DT in Round 1 will make me happy. Those are the only positions that I feel are covered at this point. And, it goes without saying, but no kickers or punters either . . .
Thanks for posting, but . . . Can't anyone write anymore? What the hell does that phrase mean? And safeties should be aggressive? There's some cutting edge analysis.
