Only need to read the title of the thread here. Obviously pertinent and what this franchise has lacked seemingly forever, since Rex went to get a god damned snack lol. We don't need a GM and HC that are best buddies with the employees (players). In any business that is a recipe for failure. Of course you can take care of your employees, yes you can love your employees, but you also need to know when to administer tough love and discipline. This is something Robert Salah and JD failed at miserably. We've all been saying the words "lack of accountability" "lack of discipline" for the last 10 or so years, spanning before Saleh/Douglas.
I've heard that Pete Carroll is a "players coach". How does he instill discipline in his teams? Or does he? I'm guessing he balances being friends with the players with accountability. With JD and Saleh there was no balance.
My guess is some are much better at keeping things "in house" rather than on their sleeve. Pete, Dick Vermeil even Sean McVay to a greater/lesser degree seem to be those guys who, outwardly, come off as "Player's Coaches" but probably run a very tight ship internally. On the other side you have guys like Parcells, Belichick, Tomlin, Shanahan...you can TELL those guys will break a foot off in some asses on the sidelines if needs be. There are so many clips of Parcells just absolutely obliterating dudes in game! But he had their respect. Unfortunately, I question the Johnson's ability to do what that writer described. I don't see either Johnson coming at any potential candidate with "hat in hand." Woody, specifically, comes off as if he already knows it all. The big difference between a guy like Jones in Dallas and Woody with the Jets is, regardless of what you think of Jones, that dude immersed himself in the team. If you are a young guy with none of the history you'd probably think Jones was the GM and not the owner. He's that embedded with the team both publicly and privately. Johnson makes "appearances" and random personnel management decisions that lack focus, clarity and thought. The NY Jets are definitely looking for a "hero" but I still think we're a long way off from Johnson holding his "hat in hand" for anyone. How long did Hess own the team before he finally capitulated? What, 30 some odd years or more? We still have a long wait ahead if that's the "barometer." I love where this writer is going with his ideas (sans the whole Zelda beginning that almost made me close the tab on my browser) but his entire diatribe starts WITH that "Hat in Hand" moment. I simply don't think we're "there" yet. I HOPE with all my being I'm wrong.
