    The Grits blitz
    Where's Jerry Glanville now?

falcons allowed 9.2 pts per game back in 1977

They ran a great scheme. Rex should model the JETS after them?
We have the personnel, we love to blitz why not use their scheme. Pros Cons? Thoughts

I haven't technically watched your clip here, but I have seen that program on NFLN. If I remember correctly, this is the show where Mike Florio commented that the '77 Falcons Grits Blitz defense wasn't all that good because the team didn't make the playoffs and was a flash in the pan. True, the team went 7-7 in 1977, but then they made the playoffs two of the next three seasons. They were arguably the best team in the regular season in 1980. Glanville was still the defensive coordinator from 78-80 and the defensive personnel and scheme didn't change significantly.

My point here is that Florio is close to clueless on some NFL-related topics.

edit- Okay, I watched it. Turns I did not remember correctly. There was another NFLN countdown show in which the '77 Falcons defense was ranked. The one I'm thinking of was more recent and had Mike Francesa and Florio, among others, offering their two cents.

Their offense was just terrible, wHich is why they did not make it to the playoffs that year. However, I AM INTERESTED IN THIS SCHEME. I don't see why we can't use it. Constant pressure + great dbs

It is a good video clip, thanks. Unfortunately, it didn't break down the x's and o's too much to tell you exactly what the scheme was other than blitzing 8 or 9 guys in the box. I think back in 1977 that was a pretty radical thing to do. Rex's defense is more complex and harder to read - which is what we need in today's NFL.

So unless the blitz gritz is more complex than just blitzing 8 or 9 from the box then I don't think we need to take a look at it.

Why the fuck would Rex Ryan model his #1 defense after a defense that was effective over 30 years ago?

Why the fuck is this a thread?

this defense is basically just a less complex version of what rex does anyway. why would rex dumb down his defense?

We actually do a lot of the same things that the "Grits Blitz" did. There is nothing wrong with Rex's scheming... We definitely were not the most talented defense last year, still we ended up #1. Our scheme is fantastic... just let rex do his job.

What is wrong with the current D?

#1 in the NFL last year. This thread makes no sense.

In this case, why don't we run the run n' shoot on offense too.

The Falcons not making the playoffs had nothing to do with the defense. Florio is an idiot. The offense put up 179 points (12.7 pts per game). The defense only allowed 9.2 ppg but still....
