For my money Dr. J. was the greatest player of all time and I was a Knicks fan watching him play for the Nets and 76ers. He played all 5 positions superlatively with the Nets moving him around depending on who they wanted to shut down. This alongside being their leading scorer, rebounder and usually the assists leader. On the business deal: any time you get a percentage of the gross, and that's what the deal was in terms of TV revenues, you are set unless the whole enterprise fails.
I read somewhere Yogi Berra negotiated for a percentage of Miller Lite sales when he did the “less filling, tastes great” commercials. Smart guy.
That was his second deal like that. He negotiated for a percentage of the gross to promote Yoohoo sales in the 50's and wound up making millions on the deal.
