I said this for months, I will judge our new FO/CS on the draft to start. So, here's what I think... First, you build the "core" of the team, the lines. With our two #1 picks the new FO got a franchise LT and a franchise C! That's some start to building the core! Tanginni said they wanted smart, tough players to build around. Who better than D'Brick and Mangold? If we'd have said two months ago the Jets would get D'Brick and Mangold, most of the fans on TGG would have been thrilled. Don't let the draft day hype, the Bush deal, passing on Leinart, etc. let you lose focus...because our FO/CS didn't let it... I was stoked after the Mangold pick. Then I'm on the phone with LV Coach wondering if we can grab Lendale White with our #2 pick. I was wondering if they think he's a jerk for not working out and gaining weight, etc? Is White a Tanginni player? Is he smart and tough enough? Then the move that had me questionning them...the trade down in round #2 with Washington. I looked on the board, and saw White, but who else might I have wanted there? Winston Justice, but he would have been another OL and a LT? Marcus McNeil who is a blow out run blocking RT? Maybe the TE Klopfenstein from Colorado State or Pope the TE from Georgia? There really wasn't a Pass Rushing UP/DOWN DE/LB left who was worthy. OK - those guys would have been good picks, but not great... But, when I found out they received a #2 in 2007, I understood! All the talk about quarterbacks - and now we have a #1 and two #2's for next year...and have some chips to try and trade to get Brady Quinn! Two start Olinemen and Quinn? OK, they traded back up to nab Clements, who's a potential player, but no harm there...we can still look at Quinn if Clemmens is In their opinion a Backup guy. If Clemmens is their Tom Brady, then the Jets can move up to get a great DE or OLB or RB in next year's draft. I also like Shlegel in round 3...good smart tough ILB for the 3-4. I don't know about Smith at SS but he's a ball hawk and hitter who's had injuries...may be a leader and Special Teamer? I like Smith from Missouri - saw him on Outside the Lines. He might have QB ability, or he can be a physically tough WR. Washington, the RB from FSU is an intruguing pickup. He reminds me of the Dave Megget type, with great hands, quick feet and acceleration. KR and PR guy who can be a dangerous 3rd down back. Overall, I'm excited by the draft. Our FO showed their mettle so far. They also set themselves up for an exciting 2007 draft and season. gg
Good post GG - I thought the Jets did well: B- There was an opportunity to be a bit risky and build the OL later while grabbing another top talent at 4 (Hawk, Ngata, Davis) or hopefully trading down But, they made the safe call and took the Incredibly upstanding local Guy.
I don't think the Jets will be in position for Quinn nor will they have interest in him. I really think they like this kid Clemens.
Well Penny, I also hear today they LOVE Clemens...because he is a tough minded smart leader type quarterback. However, that doesn't mean they didn't position themselves to move up next year for Quinn or a RB or some other player they think will make a big impact. A rating from me!
Yes! I was really pleased with the draft. I called the first two picks last week and I'm glad we stuck with Oline there. Thats the backbone of any team. I was suprised that they traded the #35 pick, (McNeil would have been great there) but it looks like we made a great deal. I was also suprised that we picked a QB so high, but hey I'll give the kid a chance. Eric Smith and Leon Washington look like they'll provided immediate Special Teams help. Brad Smith and Jason Pociask are guys who can play multiple positions. All of the guys are described as "smart and tough". I think that it was a good first draft.
They would not have moved up to draft Clemmons ahead of Minnesota if they did not value him. Look for Clemmons to be our starter by the end of the 2007 season.
Yes its a skill position draft next year so the depressed o-line haters who didnt throw themselves off a high building this year should be estatic next year with an additional 2nd round pick to boot:beer:
Unless we get the first pick, Adrian Peterson is a pipe dream. Hes an even better prospect than Reggie Bush IMO. I dont see him dropping out of #1, unless NO is on the clock. This dude is just flat out the most dominant prospect weve seen at RB in a LOOONG time
Great post the Front office did a hell of a job in the draft this year and made great picks. They picked all the blue chip collar players that this organization needs to win a super bowl. Were gonna win a championship one day I know it.
