Broncos new article today http://www.rockymountainnews.com/dr...4537157,00.html While the Broncos' work in free agency thus far has had a take-care-of-their-own approach to it, the feeling around the league Sunday night was that the Broncos now were asking themselves about some players with question marks. New York Jets defensive end John Abraham, who is at the top of the Broncos' list, is scheduled to visit the Broncos this week. While neither Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist nor coach Mike Shanahan returned calls Sunday, Abraham was believed to have lined up visits in the coming days to Denver, Seattle, Cleveland and Atlanta as his agent, Tony Agnone, tries to find a trade partner for the Jets' three-time Pro Bowl selection. Cleveland's spending spree over the weekend limits its salary-cap room, though. Also Sunday night, Ravens running back Jamal Lewis, who was offered what is believed to be just a two-year deal from Baltimore, had his agent, Mitch Frankel, trying to secure a visit to several teams, including Denver. Lewis is expected at the Dove Valley Complex today. Lewis has had reconstructive surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in both knees, has had ankle surgery and has been suspended twice under the league's substance-abuse policy. And two NFC personnel executives said Sunday that San Francisco 49ers linebacker Andre Carter was looking at the Broncos as well, but Carter was at the Washington Wizards-Detroit Pistons game Saturday as a guest of the Redskins, who were hoping to sign Carter. Also Sunday, running back Mike Anderson, whom the Broncos released March 1 to get under the salary cap, agreed to a four-year, $8 million deal with Baltimore that includes $2 million in bonus money. Anderson joins defensive end Trevor Pryce, who was released by the Broncos the same day. Pryce agreed to a five-year, $25 million deal with the Ravens on Saturday. Having entered free agency Friday night at about $90.2 million against the $102 million salary cap, the Broncos have significantly less room after re-signing defensive tackle Gerard Warren, running back Ron Dayne and tight end/long snapper Mike Leach over the weekend. After the three deals, Denver has about $4.57 million in workable cap space to make a front-line signing. That includes budgeting for the April draft - to pick on draft day, teams only need the salary cap space of the rookie minimum salary ($275,000) multiplied by the number of picks - as well as an eight-player practice squad and some room to deal with the day-to-day possibility of injured players. The team would need more cap room to sign their draft picks than the minimum of $2.48 million (the Broncos currently have nine picks) because they almost certainly will get one or two compensatory picks for their '05 free agency losses, and they do have two first-round picks at the moment. That will change if they complete a deal for Abraham. The Jets are asking for a first-round pick. The Broncos have picks at 22 and 29 in the first round.
sounds like we should throw in our 2nd rd pick and move up to having 4, 22, 29! i dont know if thats madden-esque of me but we'd be moving a few spots and theyd be able to sign the second rounder to less money.
Although they have an extra first round pick to offer, it seems the Broncos won't be able to afford Johnny Abe.
I wouldn't rule out a trade with the Broncos just yet, but they would have to cut a couple of players to have it work out financially. This may not come off.
dayne picked it up a lil if i were shanahan i'd be satisfied with bell/dayne. dayne could just work inside the 30
Your idea is not overly-maddenesque at all. I think it will boil down to money and the Broncos lack thereof.
And playing with Denver... I could be their featured back. And I'm a whole 5'7" 160lbs. Seriously, who didn't do good behind Denvers line the past what? 5, 6 years?
the broncos running back situation is just fine...they may not be studs but they dont need to be behind that line not too mention they can draft a starting running back at anytime in this draft on day 1
Jamal Lewis has signed a 3 year deal to stay with the Ravens - just heard. Maybe the Broncos are still in the J abe sweepstakes after all?!
Since they have 2 first rounders maybe we get those, then they don't need quite as much to sign thier draft picks. I can dream...
Here's the problem...they are also looking at Andre Carter from SF who will definitely come cheaper. And if the report of 4.7 million left in cap space is true, if they sign Abraham that would eat up all of the money with none to sign via Draft. Almost next to impossible unless the release someone else. Right now, they barely have enough to sign all of their draft picks currently 6-7 w/out the extra first round. Secondly, Abraham has to agree to the deal too. The way it works is that Abraham/Agent has to agree with the deal before a trade is made.
Yeah like someone said above what about Tatum Bell? Why is he in the doghouse? I think I remember reports that he was on the trade block...wouldnt mind if they included him in a trade for Abe
no this means they will have very little money lol only way J-Abe gets there is if like i said my madden like scenario denver gives us 22 and 29 and we give them Abe and our 2nd rounder (36) which would allow them to spend less money on the draft..........but theyd have to clear enough room to even do that. basically i dont see Abe goin to the broncs anymore
