One of them is taking steps aimed at making sure we all remember it, and it’s called the Asterisk Project. Jim Purucker has spent a few thousand dollars of his own money launching it, and if you go to the game on Sunday, you’re likely to encounter a marketing campaign that includes T-shirts, flyers and maybe even an airplane banner. “What we’d like to do is have a nationwide, grassroots petition effort that petitions the NFL to put an asterisk in the record book,” Purucker explained. And so Purucker sent out hundreds of emails this week encouraging Colts fans to join his Asterisk Project. His Website, footballcheaters.com, went live Wednesday. It asks for donations as well as petition signatures. Purucker is serious. “I don’t think this thing ought to go away and 10 years from now when people look at the record book and see this fantastic set of accomplishments that the Patriots have amassed,” he said, “I think there ought to be an asterisk next to it.” It’s that simple. His hope is to raise enough money to follow the Patriots to every road game and recruit support from opposing fans across the country. His goal is anything but modest. “I figure there’s at least 5 million Patriot skeptics out there,” said Purucker. “That will give me two bucks apiece.” He hopes a planned social media campaign will help and, in addition to expanding his marketing effort, Purucker hopes to commission a national poll and take other steps aimed at convincing the NFL to add the asterisk From his site:
