And before we get to Run DMC, let’s give a little love to Florida DE Derrick Harvey. The Gators’ ninth all-time leading sacker (20.5) dazzled in Gainesville and his stock is soaring. "I'm getting excited now. I can't wait for the draft," Harvey said after his pro day. "I've always dreamed of playing pro football, and it's almost here." http://origin.newyorkjets.com/blog/posts/457-count-mayock-among-ryan-s-admirers If both Darren McFadden and Vernon Gholston are gone by the time the Jets are on the clock...don't be surprised if the Jets possibly reach a bit and take this guy. Harvey and Pace could give offensive units nightmares. Not to mention David Harris, Kerry Rhodes, Kris Jenkins and Darrelle Revis I would be happy with this guy over the DT's.
If he projects well to OLB in our 3-4, than we should pull the trigger and take him. If Gholston, DMC and both Longs are gone, our options would be: Rashard Mendenhall RB Limas Sweed WR Jeff Otah OT Derrick Harvey OLB/DE Phillip Merling DE Leodis McKelvin CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie CB That would be a tough spot, but I'd take Harvey...
Harvey had a better pro day in the linebacker drills that the actual UF linebackers. This guy's made for the 3-4 and I'd have no qualms if we took him at #6 if Gholston, Long, and DMC are gone.
i agree watched him last 2 years and he's gonna be a solid pro.would be better than reaching for sweed or using another 1 on cb
But doesn't Groves and Avril project as better 3-4 OLB's? Both are faster, more fluid and have better hips. I would also include Clady in that short list of possible picks at the 6th spot.
no not clady, he is pure lt, like dbrick, we already have a lt. Anyway, i dont think Derrick Harvey has the value that mckelvin or DRC have. IF we traded back to like 13-16 i could see him being the pick.
Well, they project better as pure speed rushers. Harvey's a better overall package though, as the Groves is somewhat of a liability against the run and doesn't have a great motor and Avril has a very limited pass rush repetoir and could also be a liability at his size. You also have to keep in mind that Harvey plays a lot faster than he times. I'd agree with you about the more fluid and better hips parts, but all indications say that he blew away coaches at his pro day with his linebacker agility drills. I obviously wasn't there and didn't see any of it, but if he showed enough ability there, I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger. He consistently pressured the passer in school and was also very good against the run. He's on a whole other level than Jarvis Moss was when he came out last year, who was very one dimensional. EDIT: I won't knock on Gholston for his BCS game this past year, but by comparison Harvey raped the OSU line in the '07 BCS game for 3 sacks and was named defensive MVP of the game. He also had a career high in tackles during the Capital One Bowl this past year. The guy thrives in big games. Just food for thought.
