We can't give up yet, nomatter what you've seen. NE should probably be given an automatic bye straight to the Divisional Playoff. We will win the game this week. Let's not make this Giants defense out to be the 85 Bears all of a sudden. They destroyed a beat up Eagles team with a burnt out Andy Reid on the sidelines. Winston Justice did his best Everett Mciver impersonation. That's not happening this week. The Giants are still undisciplined, Manning stinks, Shockey drops passes, they will make stupid mistakes, the WILL give us chances to win the game. We just have to capitalize and take 7 instead of 3. Look at the AFC. Cincy is sinking, Cleveland is terrible and 2-2, Baltimore is not as fearsome as they used to be. Pittsburgh is a weak 3-1 The AFC west is crap top to bottom. Herm has somehow gotten the paper thin chiefs to 2-2, Oakland is awful at 2-2. Turner is gradually Kotiting the Chargers to death. Denver could go in either direction. The entire conference with the exception of NE and Indy is a mish mash of 7-9 and 8-8 teams. Some will get breaks and finish 9-7. some will fall to 6-10 and 5-11, others will stay put at 8-8. We could see an 8-8 division champion this year. I think we could see an 8-8 wild card as well. Certainly 9-7 should give you a playoff spot. But we must win this game, 1-4 is unacceptable The 2002 Jets were the 2007 Phillies, once in a LIFETIME you get the 1-4, 2-5 start and have every little thing go your way and sneak a wildcard. They Jets had everything go their way and won the damn division. It's not happening again. We must beat the Smurfs!
Although I think it's too early to make that assumption, I agree based on what has happened so far. And lets all hope for a jets victory sunday against the damn giants to turn this season around.
Is this actually a serious post? I don't get it. If it is, the AFC is still much better than the NFC.

I'm not sure I understand the confusion here. allan1 simply stated that he believes the AFC is awash with mediocre teams at the moment, so the Jets don't need to rip off 10 straight wins to have a sniff of the playoffs. Hanging in there around the .500 mark and then winning a couple at the end might be enough for 9-7 and a wild card. It's a plausible theory.
This thread is right on the money. The NFL is not only starting to reach parity between the conferences, they are reaching parody. The league is awful and having a bulk of bad teams in the NFC for years just means higher draft picks will eventually even the playing field. It has the AFC is has gotten as bad as the NFC. The NFL is in danger of becoming the NBA. Watching the last two Jets games I was bored to tears by the over all quality of the play by both teams. While we may see some 8 & 8 teams make the playoffs this year, the idea that a crappy Jets team can still make the playoffs isn't a good thing at all, it's a sign that the NFL has finally gone in the crapper.
When you talk about quality of play, I might agree with you, at least somewhat. The lack of proper tackling is maybe the biggest problem to me. However, the passing game is better now than it has ever been. Also, kicking is basically better now than it has ever been. Your point about mediocre teams making the playoffs is something different. The main problem is 12 teams make the playoffs now. In 1975 only 8 teams made the playoffs. It was very, very hard for a mediocre team to make the playoffs back then. I'm going to assume you enjoyed the NFL much more in the 1970s and 1980s. Look at some of these mediocre teams that qualified for postseason play: 1978 Eagles 9-7 Vikings 8-7-1 Falcons 9-7 1979 Rams 9-7 (made it to Super Bowl) 1980 Vikings 9-7 1981 Giants 9-7 Buccaneers 9-7 1982 quite a few teams, due to the 16-team playoff tournament 1983 Seahawks 9-7 Broncos 9-7 Lions 9-7 Rams 9-7 1984 Giants 9-7 Steelers 9-7 1985 Browns 8-8 1987 Colts 9-6 Oilers 9-6 Seahawks 9-6 Vikings 8-7 1988 Seahawks 9-7 1989 Bills 9-7 Browns 9-6-1 Oilers 9-7 Steelers 9-7
I agree with you about the kicking game, I disagree with you about the QB play. The rules have been changed and more and more teams are using safe passing attack. When a guy like Joey Harrington is completing passes above 70% and Chad is completing at 75% rate and the teams aren't scoring at a prolific rate it says more about the style of play than the quality of play.
Well, the style of kicking has changed, the last straight away kicker was Mark Mosely and he retired in the 80's. Every kicker since then has been soccer style since it gives you more power and accuracy. Also you have to remember that domed stadiums and astroturf(field turf now) have made things easier for kickers. tackling is fundamentally worse than it was, and passing is much easier because the defensive backs have had their hands tied. You can no longer have guys like Tatum and Atkinson running a muck and putting the fear of god into receivers. Also the QB can't be breathed on or it's 15 yards and a suspension (unless it's the patriots doing it)
This the the most cohesive and logical thing I've ever seen allan1 put together. Even the Giant-bashing was relatively restrained. I'm so proud of you!
LTS how many drives will Shockey kill for you tomorrow? Great talent for getting down the field and screwing the pouch on third down.
Are you guys going to play nice tomorrow? If so there will be no reason to read the gameday threads! I just hope if the opening drive stalls on the Giants 40 with less than a yard we do not see Benny.
I see four strong teams in the AFC this year: New England, Indianapolis, Tennessee and Pittsburgh. There are another four that would be above average in most years in Cincinnati, Baltimore, San Diego and Denver. I'll admit I have no clue how Cincinnati and San Diego have played so poorly so far. With San Diego it's easy to say it's a Norv Turner issue, but the fact is that Turner should be able to coach that talent to 10 wins just standing there on the sidelines with a paper bag over his head. Something else is going on there and it's starting to look like player anger over the sacking of Marty Schottenheimer. Marvin Lewis has some explaining to do though. There is way too much talent in Cincinnati for them to have played so average over the last few years and started so poorly this season. You can say that the Bengals play in a rough neighborhood in the AFC North and you'd be right, but they have too much talent to keep going 8-8.
San Diego's problem is the change in the coaching staff. The same Super Bowl contender type of personnel is there. Cincinnati has talent on offense, but not on defense. They have also suffered several injuries on defense to boot.
Yeah but the problems Cincy has right now should have them at 2-2 and headed for 9-7, not 1-3 headed for 7-9. I am absolutely not sold on Marvin Lewis at this point. I think he has arguably done less with more than any coach in the NFL over the last 3+ seasons.
