Okay, I've heard a lot about how our 4th round picks have always been our best ones. How giving up a 2nd might even be more advantageous. But is this true? Let's take a look at the last 5 drafts (excluding 2008), and look at the players we've taken in each round. 2003: Round 1: Dewayne Robertson Round 2: Victor Hobson Round 3: BJ Askew Round 4: No Pick Round 5: Derrick Pagel, Matt Walters Round 6: Brooks Bollinger Round 7: Matt Yovanovits 2004: Round 1: Jonathan Vilma Round 2: No pick Round 3: Derrick Strait Round 4: Jerricho Cotchery, Adrian Jones Round 5: Eric Coleman Round 6: Marko Cavka Round 7: Darrell McClover, Trevor Johnson, Derrick Ward, Rashad Washington 2005: Round 1: No pick Round 2: Mike Nugent, Justin Miller Round 3: Sione Pouha Round 4: Kerry Rhodes Round 5: Andre Maddox Round 6: Cedric Houston Round 7: Joel Dreesen, Harry Johnson 2006: Round 1: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold Round 2: Kellen Clemens Round 3: Anthony Schlegel, Eric Smith Round 4: Brad Smith, Leon Washington Round 5: Jason Pociask Round 6: Drew Coleman Round 7: Titus Adams 2007: Round 1: Darelle Revis Round 2: David Harris Round 3: No Pick Round 4: No Pick Round 5: No Pick Round 6: Jacob Bender Round 7: Chansi Stuckey When looked at by round drafted, we get the following results: 1st round: Robertson, Vilma, Ferguson, Mangold, Revis 2nd round: Hobson, Nugent, Miller, Clemens, Harris 3rd round: Askew, Strait, Pouha, Schlegel, E. Smith 4th round: Cotchery, Jones, Rhodes, B. Smith, L. Washington 5th round: Pagel, Walters, E. Coleman, Maddox, Pociask 6th round: Bollinger, Cavka, Houston, D. Coleman, Bender 7th round: Yovanovits, McClover, T. Johnson, Ward, R. Washington, Dreesen, H. Johnson, Adams, Stuckey The Verdict: The Jets 4th round draft picks have performed extraordinarily well, not just in the scope of late round pick, but for any NFL player. Jerricho Cotchery is an excellent wide receiver, Leon Washington a great kick returner and change-of-pace back. Kerry Rhodes is one of the best safeties in football. However, on the flip side, the team's second round selections, with the exception of David Harris, have been ver poor. Only one player taken in the 2nd round of the past 5 drafts is a starter. It is difficult to evaluate the 1st round draft choices of the Jets. Vilma was a great fit for the 4-3, but struggled mightily in the 3-4 defense favored by Eric Mangini. So too did Dewayne Robertson. And while D'Brickashaw Ferguson has been a solid LT, Nick Mangold and Darrelle Revis have established themselves as stars at their own positions. Overall, I would have to suggest that the idea that the Jets have performed better drafting in the 4th round is, in fact, true. When you look at the groups of players drafted in each round, I believe you would prefer the players we took in the 4th to those selected in any other round.
I don't think it was ever a myth and pretty much everyone here knows who we've drafted in the fourth round in the last five years or so. File under UNNECESSARY.
My Verdict: You just wasted a whole lot of time trying to prove somthing everyone knows. high picks pan out more often and are usually better players long term. The Jets have had several good 4th rounders and people like to point that out. Its friendly banter, not us trying to reinvent the wheel. Yeesh.
I don't think you needed to go thru all that work to find out our 4th round picks have been gems.
wow alot of work to state the obvious. Thanks again for confirming that our latest 4th rounders have been gems. I propose that for the '09 draft, we only pick in the 4th round. Trade everything else down or up to get there.
Now there's an idea. Keep trading picks down until we've accumulated 7 or 8 4th round picks and completely shore up the team. At the initial contract level of a 4th round pick, we'd be set for years!
Yeah, the jury's got to still be out. I know we all love Dwight Lowery, but he's played all of 1 NFL game. He's not Kerry Rhodes...yet
It's like Mythbusters...you start with a myth and either prove it or bust it. In this case, the myth was proven
I don't want to start a f**kin' problem on this thread but that is an AWESOME FUCKIN ANALYSIS that you did and I THANK YOU FOR DOING IT!!!!!!!!!!!! What you did was look at the data and confirmed the hypothesis. Often, people have hypotheses and they are full of s**t! I'm not talking about any Jets fan--I mean people everywhere are biased by things other than the facts. ED JR. just gave us the facts and now, we can all say, Fuck yeah--the 4th rd is the shit for the Jets and fuck anyone who says differently!
