We passed on Matt Lienart. Man did we dodge an oncoming bullet there. So it could have been worse guys. Much worse.
Leinart was never a particularly good prospect. He had Chad type ability and no demonstration of the maturity to make that work in the NFL. He should have gone on the 27 pick to somebody. The 9 was a disaster waiting to happen.
I liked Leinart some out of college. I LOVED Cutler, but I was hoping we'd trade down first. I wanted Bush or Cutler, with Brick or Leinart being okay consolation prizes.
I like what we did with our 4th pick there. I think d-Brick will be a great Olineman for a long long time for us. Cutler has not done anything spactacular yet with that rifle of an arm he has, and Leinart imo is never going to make it as an elite NFL QB. D-brick was a great pic imo. Although AJ Hawk might have been a close second lol.
I liked Young better than the other 2 going into the draft and I still like Young better than the other 2 right now, the story is still out on D'Brick
So glad we didn't buy into the Leinart hype for the draft, that would've put us back for some years IMO.
I think physically Leinart is fine. But I think him staying in college another year showed he wasn't going to be a great NFL QB. Most guys want are looking forward to the challenge, and seemed determined to make themselves the best player they can be. Leinart seems more like a guy who just enjoys being a star and a celebrity. I don't think he's mature enough to put in the work that it takes to be a really good NFL QB.
Vince Young has a really good chance to be a better version of Terry Bradshaw and he's got the coach to make special things happen over the next decade.
I've always thought he was overhyped.. glad we passed. He's obviously got talent, but he's immature and doesn't seem to have nfl smarts. Plus he looks and sounds like a complete toolbox.
A better version of Bradshaw would certainly be great. So far I don't see it but Bradshaw started off slow too.
Just think we could have taken Leinart first and solved our LT problems by taking Winston Justice in the 2nd! How sweet would that have been!
Bradshaw was winning ugly early on. His development as a polished QB came a bit later, but he was leading the Steelers to victories, albeit just improvements over the 1-13 team before he got there. His completion percentage in his first season was under 40% and he threw 24 INT's. At this point Young is well ahead of the standard he set, with some differences based on the era of course.
I would have liked that. I think I may have said something like that back before the 2006 draft. Realistically, though, if we had traded down, I think that the majority of Jets fans would have gone into stage-four apoplexy. D'Brick didn't excite me at the time, but he looked like a good first building block; no pun intended. A year and a half later, it seems clear that there were better options. Even if he turns out to be a solid left tackle, there were better options.
As much as I like trading down in the 1st round if we had traded away from a clear need and drafted yet another defensive lineman in the 1st round I would have been very annoyed. In retrospect of course we had no idea that the Jets had no really effective 3-4 linemen at the time and it might have been the right move to trade down for a NT. This back and forth thing between the 3-4 and the 4-3 has cost the Jets more effective talent on defense than any other team in the NFL over the last decade. 4-3 (Kotite) to 3-4 (Parcells) cost us Hugh Douglas. 3-4 (Parcells) to 4-3 (Edwards) cost us James Farrior. 4-3 (Edwards) to 3-4 (Mangini) has effectively cost us Vilma and D-Rob. That's a lot of talent to lose over a decade just because you cannot decide which front to play on a consistent basis. It's a lot of one and two year dislocations in the defensive front too.
