At 6'7" and 335 this guy is a an artery clogging giant. Just the kind of wide body we need to sure up our middle. If we have him in the middle and Robertson and Ellis on either end our DL all of a sudden becomes formidable. I would imagine we could get him for a reasonalbe price Terdell Sands UFA Oakland Raiders The defensive tackle entered his fifth NFL season without much fanfare. He was stuck behind other players, and hadn?t been thought of as an impact player by most. However, the former Chattanooga player has shined when given the opportunity. One reason that Sands has been effective is his size. Standing 6?7? and weighing 335 pounds, Sands is enormous, and difficult to take out of a play. His height allows him to bat down passes if he cannot get penetration, and he has developed a decent awareness of where the ball is. In non-starter minutes, he?s still just two tackles away from his career season high, and he is earning more and more time each week. The Raider will be well-served to sign him to an extension, but Sands might look elsewhere if Oakland won?t guarantee him more playing time.
ok...these NT threads are outta control IMO...however granted it is the offseason now, i guess we can discuss the idea..... heres my take...you cant just stick a big body in the middle and hope he is going to make a huge impact....he needs to have talent....you stick a backup 6'7, 350 lb fatass who cant play ball for his life and you have exactly what you bargained for...a backup...lets just save the talk about NTs....because lets face it....we are getting one in the draft this year..
I wouldn't mind having a player with the nickname 'Turd'. I would probably even make an avatar with him.
NO Terdel Sands is not a true backup. HE plays just as much as starters W sapp and Tom kelly in Raiders three man rotation at DT. Without a doubt, Terdel Sands is Raiders best run stuffer.(pretty athlethic with some pass rush moves) ONly reason he dosen't start is because its tough to tell a future probowler W sapp that hes not starting. (Sapp ideally you would like to use just in pass rushing situaations) Raiders are working on extension right now with Sands and hes going to be a big part of the Raiders defense next year. Most likely you will see raiders best Dlineman Tom Kelly move to DE . Raiders defensiveline of LDe D Burgess LDT Terdel Sands RDT Big Run stuffer FA) RDE TOm kelly and addition of Darnel Bing to SSLB will really shore up Raiders run defense.
He wouldn't be a bad pickup. I would like him above Moore to be our backup NT. But I don't know if I want him to be our full time NT.
Did you not listen to me. Raiders use a three man rotation at DT.(probably will be four man next season, as A Hawthorne should start to see alot more playing time) They all play equal minutes. Rob Ryan keeps everyone fresh.
what part of "he wont be effective as a full time starter" you did not understand. bring him in to play on running downs etc but i dont want him to be our fulltime starter at NT
First even at 6'7 340 Terdel Sands is pretty quick defensivelineman. Unlike Ted Washingtion this guy can put a pass ruish on. Just Raiders have better options rushing the passer at DT TOm kelly and W sapp) Raiders had 14.5 sacks from their DTs and that with so few passing attempts. Third it should be all mute this topic, as Sands will probably resign with Raiders before freeagency ever start
why? why would anyone in their right mind resign with Oakland? if he wants a chance to play in the Playoffs, then he should look elsewhere. cheers
did anyone say we're looking for a NT to play on EVERY down? i said i dont think he could become a starter because he's not in great shape.
i know him, trust me. i've seen him play. he's disruptive, he can get to the QB but i dont think he would be effective enough as a starter. if you start him at NT against the patriots do you really think you can count on him to stop the run in the 4th quarter with 5 mins left? i highly doubt it
There aren't any NTs that are full time starters. Or any full time d-linemen. The coaching staff uses a rotationof D-linemen to keep evryone fresh. Sands would be a nice addition to the rotation.
wow. i hope you're kidding me because if not you definitely dont know what you're talking about. there are starters, backups and situational guys. and thats what sands is. he's a guy you can plug in there on 3rd and inches or 1st and 10 to stop the run. thats about it. he is NOT a starter. you cant give him 50 snaps/game and still expect him to be an effective run stopper.
