Ten NFL Teams Most Likely to Feature a New Starting QB in 2026 A few interesting options could shake lose...Geno, Tua, Kyler, Rodgers, Bryce Young, Danny Dimes...and of course, Justin Fields! 1. New York Jets With head coach Aaron Glenn refusing to even name his starting quarterback each week now, it is painfully obvious to Jets fans that yet another change is coming at the position. Complicating matters is the Jets’ financial situation — the club has $35 million in dead cap money still on the books next year, with Aaron Rodgers and both Justin Fields ($23 million) and Tyrod Taylor ($2.4 million) under contract in 2026. While a rookie deal could easily be managed financially, I contend that the defensive-minded head coach is likely going to prefer a veteran option in his second season rather than risk putting himself on the firing line with another losing campaign. It is also worth noting the Jets’ history of draft misses at quarterback. New York has invested five picks in quarterbacks over the past 10 drafts, including the No. 2 and No. 3 overall selections on Zach Wilson (2021) and the aforementioned Sam Darnold (2018), respectively. As eager as 78-year-old owner Woody Johnson might be to improve play at the position, will he sign off on yet another first-round gamble? But acquiring all those draft picks in the recent trades of Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams could make the Jets real players should one of the other teams listed below opt to peddle their current quarterback. ** Thread rules cut off this post part way thru, so I deleted 2-10. Geno, Tua, Kyler, Rodgers, Bryce Young, Danny Dimes, Mac Jones... This list has SOJ written all over it.
There is not a single QB mentioned that I would want the Jets to go anywhere near even if they were available without giving up any draft picks let alone any premium picks.
That’s a shit list…the only guy on there I’d even consider is Daniel Jones…HELL NO to all the other guys there I doubt Jones would consider us anyway as he’ll have much better options after this year, including resigning with the Colts which I would expect (though you never know…I thought the Vikings should have resigned Darnold but they kind of outsmarted themselves a bit there)
Now there is a shitlist if I've ever seen one. We would be better off running it back with Fields and TT instead of any of the stiffs listed. I have a feeling they will draft their FQB in '26, keep TT on the roster as a player/coach and perhaps Fields as a placeholder. I doubt if Glenn is worried about getting fired next year especially if the Fields we saw 2 weeks agon shows up the rest of the year. Fields is gone after '26 no matter how well he plays but with TT training hopefully Mendoza, perhaps for once we catch a break. We got ourselves a GM now and hopefully he's as good a talent evaluator as he is a judge of character. I wouldn't want to play poker with Mougey for sure...
The Cards are in a tough place if they want to part ways with Murray as he is $53m against the cap next year then $43m the following two year (with a possible escape from the contract for 2028 without a cap hit or $7m in 2027 if you just cut him).
It doesn’t inhibit teams as much as it seems though. The Broncos did it with Russ. We did it with Rodgers. It hampers the cap for a short period of time primarily the first year and then it is what it is. I mean we still signed free agents with Rodgers big ol’ cap hit. I’d imagine the Cards seek a trade partner for a mid round pick and if/when no one bites, they’ll just eat the money for a year and move on.
I don’t agree with his assessment. The current list is worse than what we had with AR and comparable to Justin. Plus AG is not worried about getting fired. The big question to me is simple. Do they see enough potential on any of the QB in this year draft, and or is there a vet that justifies a move from Fields. So far the pickings are very slim. Sad that AR is probably at the top of that list. What’s Cousins up to these days?
Along those lines, if the Colts and Cowboys gave up what they did in those trades, imagine what Moug asked for? Holy shit, gotta believe he asked for even more if this is what gave up...
Interesting how Mac Jones looks pretty much like Brock Purdy with Shanahan and similar how Jimmy G looked there too... Amazing to have a guy like Shanahan as a coach, where if a QB is somewhat decent and not total garbage, he will make them look good...
Boss. This is a high praise coming from a seasoned darksider like yourself. Care to elaborate on Mougey? You got me intrigued.
This list is straight up trash. Go ahead and sign one of these guys and Glenn will be out in 2 years. You can’t trade for Burrow without giving up all out draft capital. He’d cost all 5 first round picks. He’d be in a worse situation than he already is. We need to draft a QB, and for once it needs to be the right guy.
I'm a results oriented person Brook. I'm more concerned with the results of an action than going into the minutiae of a bulletpoint evaluation. I will say this.. Mougey had a rebuild plan coming in this job just like any new GM. He knew he had to spend talent in order to replace it with fresh talent. That's exactly what he did. What he got in return for what he spent is in itself an accomplishment JD could only dream of. How many extra picks did we get on top of our own? Do we really miss that 3rd rd. pick JD flushed with the Reddick fiasco? That answer is no. Howie Roseman who I think just might be the gold standard these days as a GM fleeced Douglas. Mougey unloaded an underperforming CB and got an additional WR plus an additional pick. He was just getting started evidently. The return on the Gardner/Williams trades would have made Roseman proud. The Jets now have 18 picks over the next 2 drafts total. Whether we want to admit it or not, the roster had gotten stale. Guys were living off their reputations instead of their performance. The results simply were not there, and an overhaul was warranted. It was going to cost plenty, but it had to be done. Mougey surprised me with not only his shrewdness, but his resolve to make the hard choices. JD didn't have the balls to blow it up. Mougey did.. GM's like that don't come along often especially for the Jets. We got lucky Brook. We finally got us a GM. Two questions remain... can he close with great talent evaluation giving Glenn and his CS the fresh talent needed to compete? The last thing we need is a redux of the Idzik 12 with the Mougey 18... Yep, I have hope Brook. I'm a big fan of Mougey. Glenn otoh is still learning his job so I'm willing to give him 3 years just like we gave Saleh. That should be enough time for the Jets to takeoff. If not, Glenn rightly should be walked.
Thank you boss. Great write up. I am very hopeful and just like you say until I see him hit those draft picks, I will temper my expectations from him. But early signs are great, you are right.
That list at the top is disheartening. There really is a QB shortage in the league. Hell, Daniel Jones is going to get a massive extension from the Colts, especially if they make the playoffs. Richardson was a mistake, big time, and much like the Niner's with Lance and lucking into Purdy, the Colts hit it with Jones. Some idiot is going to bring Richardson in but I predict he's out of football in 2 years. I have no idea with this team intends to do at the QB slot but they are going to get the hell beat out of them the rest of the season. I'd say should be interesting but this team won't be interesting again until, as usual, draft day.
