http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/sto...rk-jets-tim-tebow-game-new-role-special-teams A (rare) good article from Dick Cimini.
I think Tebow is the biggest media distraction that I've ever seen on the Jets. He's got a pretty superfluous role in terms of his ability to actually impact the results, however he gets enormous attention all the time and mainly for things unlikely to matter. He makes Keyshawn Johnson look like a wallflower and he does it without talking much or actively promoting himself. I have to say that the overall effect is really disconcerting. It's not a natural phenomenon and things that don't work in nature often have really bizarre consequences when everything plays out.
One correction to the article; it won't be Tebow's first tackle. He's made at least 1 other. At about the 40 second mark, after the Denver receiver fumbles the ball.
That was preseason, though. So first statistical recording of a tackle, maybe. He only threw 16 interceptions in his entire college career (against 88 touchdowns), so he hasn't had many opportunities to make a tackle. (Andrew Luck had 82/22 by way of comparison).
I'm sure he tallied a few tackles last year off of his own fumbles. He did lead the league in fumbles per game, you know.
wrong again (as you are usually) Matt Moore led the league in fumbles per game. Also a much more telling stat is how many fumbles were lost. Tebow lost 6 fumbles last year. here look it up (and he had a lot of touches that were runs that other QBs did not have...he lost 2 on designed runs) http://www.nfl.com/player/timtebow/497135/profile to hear some of the haters you would think he lost 6 fumbles per game
Just some numerical perspective -- believe or not, people still toss around nams like "Eric Crouch" and "Brad Smith" in discussions about Tebow, as if they've got no concept of how much and how efficiently he threw the ball in college. So the point is just a baseline -- the prototypical pro-style, pro-prospect quarterback, who was considered very good. The point is not to claim that Tebow is better than Andrew Luck. (But that is the typical circular flow of conversation -- "Tebow is run first like Eric Crouch!" "No, Tebow threw more touchdown passes than Andrew Luck, while running more touchdowns than Herschel Walker." "But, but, Tebow is not as good as Andrew Luck!" That kind of thing).
I'll bite. Tebow did it against the same if not even tougher competition in college. Tebow actually looked like the passer he was in college during his 3 games he started his rookie year (that included the all time NFL record rookie QB TD run of 40 yards and also a 300+ yard passing game in which he had his first late game comeback win). After an off season of trying to change to appease the football Gods, we get the hot mess we see occasionally now. This is not an excuse, its actually reality, what i just said happened. Good or bad it is what it is. bad motion or not he got it done (ask Joe Montana who also made the observation ) , now not so much.
He didn't, but he only lost 6 fumbles (so that's 6 opportunities to make a tackle), but I disagree with your opinion that he had tackles after his own lost fumbles. First of all, he didn't. Second of all, the guy who fumbles is usually unlikely to be in a position to make the tackle. So, all around fail post.
Yeah, it's combined turnovers for Sanchez. Sanchez lost 8 fumbles to Tebow's 6, but Sanchez only had 10 fumbles to Tebow's 12. Tebow ran the ball 122 times, so he more opportunities for fumbles at the end of a play that he could fall on. Sanchez's were more in the pocket, and more difficult to cover perhaps. Either way, it's way to many fumbles and I consider Tebow's and Sanchez's fumbles last year an aberration.
Just because you are lucky enough to have a teammate fall on your fumble, does not make a stat 'telling'.
Well, I hate to explain things again, phaytal -- but a recovered fumble does not present an opportunity for Tebow to make a tackle, which was the sub-topic at hand. So, the number of fumbles lost is the relevant stat in chances to make a tackle.
