Before acquiring Cromartie from the Chargers three weeks ago, Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum believed his only other option to upgrade the cornerback position was to use the team’s first-round pick, 29th overall. “We thought corner was an absolute must,” Tannenbaum said on ESPN New York (via Sports Radio Interviews). “We felt that we had to improve that position. So Cromartie was the key to the offseason because, looking at our options, it was the Cromartie trade -– or it was the 29th pick in the draft. To get that out of the way, we really enhanced our draft because now we can say that whatever happens in the draft, we can take whoever we want. Move up, move down we can get what we want. Without Cromartie, at the 29th pick in the draft, we would have taken a corner.” Our experts agree with Tannenbaum and believe the Jets now will target wide receivers who can help QB Mark Sanchez at No. 29. Bucky Brooks has Georgia Tech WR Demaryius Thomas going to the Jets in his latest mock draft, and Pat Kirwan likes Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant in that spot. The Jets’ lack of need at cornerback might be good for the Vikings, who hold the No. 30 pick and need help in the secondary. Brooks has Rutgers CB Devin McCourty heading to Minnesota, and Kirwan pegs USC safety Taylor Mays to wear purple.

Exactly. I wouldn't be surprised at all to still take a corner. Especially in the AFC 2 CBs are not sufficient... you need 3-4.
I just love the fact that they didn't sit back and force something, they went out and made it so they could get the best player available. The teams that draft for need with always miss more than teams that can pick the best player on the board. That's why certain teams can stay on top for so long.
great point. The only problem is that Tanny loves to trade up for that guy and in the process loses depth through the draft. Let's hope he stays put or trades down this time.
Except he's been successful every time he has traded up. His track record is far superior trading up than it is staying put.
Tanny works on a theory that you really only get 3-4 guys in the draft who contribute each year.So moving picks and coming away with 2-3 quality guys is better than 1 quality,2-3 average and 2-3 guys who may or may not make the team.The down side is you don't get alot of 5th, 6th round gems but every pick seems to contribute.I don't think he's going to change that now.I think there is going to be alot of hate sent his way when he moves up either in the first or second round this year.Thats why he needed to get that pick for Rhodes.It had more to do with getting ammo to move than adding depth to the roster.
no one. You sit and you wait for a good pick to drop in your lap in this draft. Tanny never said corner is off the table at 29. If Kyle Wilson/Brandon Graham is sitting at 29, you don't not take him because of the AC trade. That's stupid. All he said was corner was the only option at 29. Now it can be CB, DL, OL, FS, LB, etc.
There are a lot of question marks surrounding this sentence: 2008: Tannenbaum was ready to pick Leodis McKelvin until Mangini decided he needed to draft a shittier version of Mike Mamula. If it wasn't for Magini's dumb ass, that would have been a great pickup. 2006: Stayed put to pick Brick, tried to trade up to draft Leinart, then stayed put to draft Mangold. If Tannenbaum was successful in making that trade, he would have been even more derided than for picking Clemens(trade up).
What does Brandon Graham have to do with AC? If he's on the board at 29, I take him almost regardless of who else is available.
In a second. Graham has a non stop motor, very good pass rushing skills, and has played standing up some already at school. Odrick and Cody would both fit our D, but Graham has the ability to be a game changer in the 34.
