They aren't going to tell you anything, I think it's a good sign both are still here and they didn't address either area in FA but we'll see what happens on draft day
I expect Tannenbaum and Mangini to be aggressive in remaking the defensive front 7. How that turns out I don't know. You could make an argument for trading any of Ellis, D-Rob, Vilma, Hobson or Barton. The only guys that I think are absolutely safe at the moment are Bryan Thomas and Kenyon Coleman. Thomas because he had a very good year and just signed a big deal and Coleman because you don't sign FA's and then trade them, the cap punishes you for doing that.
It's really hard to trade a player on draft day unless the groundwork has been thoroughly laid before that. Vilma is gonna need a physical wherever he goes, as will D-Rob, since both have underlying dormant knee issues.
the opposite thing wouldve been "vilma and d-rob arent going anywhere and we never thought about trading them." instead he confirms the rumors and says weird things like "we expect him to be here".
The way I read Tannenbaum's comments he's open to the possibility of trading either player but expects that they'll be Jets next season and thinks that's just fine. That's about as plausible a denial as you'd expect to get out of him. Combine it with his remark the other day that nobody is untouchable and it makes for a very interesting week leading up to the draft.
The only way Vilma should be traded is if it's for a deal that allows them to grab one of the Top 2 DTs, Branch or Okoye. And even then, it doesn't make sense, because that's what Vilma has been needing. Remember, in the year's between Adams/Siragusa and Ngota, people were wondering what was wrong with Ray Lewis. The only thing wrong with Vilma is the guys in front of him. I would definitely trade D-rob and the 1st pick to get one of those true NTs however. D-rob's knees are a ticking bomb.
Branch I'd be okay with a trade for, either Vilma or D-Rob. Okoye I think is not the same caliber prospect. He has high upside potential and a lot of risk too. Branch is going to be a very good defensive tackle and maybe a very good nose tackle. I am flabbergasted that he's dropping at this point after his efforts spearheading the Michigan D the last two seasons. If he drops out of the top 5 it means a lot of people aren't doing their job right.
I think Tannenbaum is right in that it is difficult to quantify what D-Rob has done last year and that he did play well enough within the scheme of things. Given that, if Alan Branch (who is the only suitable 3-4 NT in the 1st Rd.) falls all the way down to the late teens/high 20's, I wouldn't be critical of the Jets FO if they package D-Rob and a 2nd day pick in 2008 for Branch. As for Vilma, I don't understand all the buzz about trading one of the best young MLB in the league just because he's "better" suited for the 4-3. The dude is a player regardless of the scheme.
If Branch falls he will probably land 12 or 13. That's about the point at which player personnel directors and GM's have their job on the line if he gets past and turns into the next great tackle. This is not a player from a small program who had people's eye last season but didn't do quite enough to get over the top as a high first round pick. This is one of the best defensive tackles to come out in the last half decade and he did it in the limelight for multiple seasons with one of the top programs in the country. The extra weight at the combine didn't help him a lot but geez he's a defensive tackle, his team is gonna want him at 335 or 340 - more if he's in a 3-4. I watch the pundits move him down and all I'm thinking is Warren Sapp and what happened to him in 1995. Same thing, different reasons.
theres no way they could justify trading vilma on the field or to the fanbase. trading JV would be a disasterous move unless the deal offered was so good that you couldnt pass it up....and in the NFL those deals are to find. vilma had initial troubles settling into the defense, but the latter half of the year he showed a markedly betterr grasp for the system, and what is expected from his position in it. moving d-slob would be a more justifiable move....as long as it included an impact key need player....or got us into the top 5 somehow. he has already shown that he can play at a high level in a 4-3 with another decent DT n the scheme....his best year was when he and fergie were clogging the middle. so theres value there with 4-3 base teams....but i dont think they will move him....they made too much of an investment to give up this soon and maybe really lose out on some of the dividends that he could pay out on. 2 first round picks for him is a big deal....thats a bigger investment than giving him a bigtime money deal....
Guys, doesn't Vilma call the defense as he is lining up to the ball based on what he sees. He is recognized as a leader on the team. I really think the crux of the problem is that very often last year, oposing running backs made it passed or D-line and not long after that into our secondary. Solution: Plug up the middle and you give Vilma a good opportunity at being more mobile and more of an impact player than last year. Keep Vilma and figure out how to get a decent NT somehow.
I agree with your assessment and that's why there was an "if" in my post....as unlike as it may be, "if" it does happen and he manages to slide all the way down to a slot that the Jets may be able to move up to, then it may make some sense to make the move.
I would be thrilled if they made an accurate value trade up for 13 and got him. Not throw the kitchen sink at the Rams but an even deal to get the big DT that they probably won't have access to for the next half dozen years as their stock rises. The Rams took Jimmy Kennedy on the 12 when they were in this position 4 years ago. They may want to diversify the risk a bit.
