KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press the Kansas City Chiefs voided the contract of veteran linebacker Tamba Hali, who took a pay cut with a reworked deal to remain with the team last season.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday because the Chiefs aren't allowed to discuss contract matters.

Hali had four voidable years added to his one-year contract so that the team could spread out his signing bonus, thereby creating additional salary cap space last offseason. But the contract also stipulated the Chiefs had until Friday to sign Hali to an extension, otherwise he would become a free agent.

Despite dealing with a bothersome knee much of last season, Hali had 6 1-2 sacks and was voted to his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl. The 10-year veteran will turn 33 in November.

The Kansas City Star first reported that Hali's contract was voided.

C'mon back to NJ Hali, he would be a great mentor for Lorenzo Mauldin

All 4 of my kids were born in Holy Name Hospital in his adopted hometown of Teaneck NJ.

    The Highway Men.

We were long gone by the time he got there.

That's awesome dude. My friend actually played on the same football team as him. He's got some violent hands when rushing the passer, and it was the same way back in HS. I wish I got to see him play. I was able to see Moreno play and watched this fucker score 7 times against my High School.

Best HS player I ever saw by a long shot was Brad Cushing. Killed Chris Simms in the NJ HS State Finals Bergen Catholic v Don Bosco. RB, WR, KR, PR, LB, S- he did it all in one game.

Hire him as a coach. 33 year old vets with physical issues are almost never a good buy.

You don't sign players to be mentors. You sign them to play. Mauldin's mentor is the LB coach, not his competetitor for a spot on the 45.

I don't see why you can't play, be competitive and help mentor a young player. Hali would lead by example on and off the field. Plus, I see Hali taking Calvin Paces job anyway.

Just by competing in practice makes a younger player get more experience.
Of course his knee must first checked out.
