Is there a reason why the Jets won't do it? I think it makes sense being that it would allow Vilma to play more to his strengths and free him up being on the outside. I like Victor Hobson but he doesn't rush the passer as well as you'd like an outside linebacker to play. I remember pleading for the Jets to move Bryan Thomas to LB and look how that worked out.

Wasnt vilma an OLB at miami, but then herm converted him to MLB, and now he's playing ILB. I think his speed could be an asset on the outside, but who knows.

I suggested this last year and some people agreed. Others said that we need to use his smarts in the middle of the defense to get everyone where they need to be on pre-snap reads. From what I have heard, Harris is quite cerebral, as he comes along Vilma may be able to move outside. The problem is that Vilma is not the best blitzer either. It sux to say because I like him, but this could be Vilmas final season with us, he is too good a fit at 4-3 MLB, and too out of place in the 3-4. I have yet to see the schemes the Jets were supposedly going to put forth this year to help free Vilma up to make plays.

    This is a serious question:

You know we run a 3-4 defense?

Do some homework on the size of OLB's in a 3-4 scheme.

Yeah I figured that one of the reasons they kept him on the inside is to call the plays but if Harris is as good as expected then he might be able to take over that roll. I love Vilma and I'd hate to lose a player like him....the Jets would be smart to try and fit him into a roll that works for him. He's the type of defensive player that deserves to have the defense accomodate him....he's that much of a difference maker.

We have Hobson at 6 ft and 250 lbs vs Vilma at 6ft 1in and 230 lbs.......Vilma makes up for the difference in weight with more speed.

i wouldnt be to worried about that. The guy is a tackling machine and i think if needed could line up with a TE. I like the idea

this is what i've been saying. if vilma still struggles in the ILB spot in the 3-4 try and convert him to OLB. you just cant give up on a guy with as much talent as vilma because if you use him right he can be a great linebacker

Ok Hobson is the homework you did................LOL

Here let me help by using real OLB's in a 3-4 scheme:

B.Thomas- yeah I know you conveniently forgot him: 6'4 266
    A. Thomas- 6'2 270 used as ILB too
    Shawn Merriman- 6'4 272
    M. Vrabel- 6'4 261
    Shaun Phillips 6'3 262
    M Lawson- 6'5 250
    T. Banta Cain- 6'2 280

Vilma is too small to play the OLB in a 3-4 scheme.

Edit the only one that is smallish and listed as an OLB would be R. Colvin at 6'3 250 and he is a damn site bigger than Vilma.

Further Edit: Why is it you think that the best OLB's in a 3-4 scheme are tweener DE's ?

Make Vilma the Strong Safety and get rid of Coleman.

vilma excells in coverage...and doesnt have the size for olb
i think our D will improve...and it already has
3 points in the 2nd half...and mcgahee under 100 yards
our team needs to work on not giving up a td inside 2 minutes in the first half...it killed us both games
2 amazing te catches to knock us down b4 the half...the difference maker
if heap doesnt get the foot down...all we would have needed was a fg to tie
    huge difference
the run defense looked respectable in both games...we just were spread out by NE...and we dont have the secondary to defend that(no one might)
we need dyson to get healthy...and to continue working on a pass rush
this team will get better as the season goes on...
technically the next 4 teams we play don't have a win yet...

i like vilma, and i think hes a solid player, but hes not so good that he should have a defense accomodate him. theres a handful of LBs worthy of something like that, and hes not one of them. you could take ray lewis and put him in any scheme and he will prodce...vilma isnt on that level.

Totally agree and will further add:

I like Vilma. However when has he shown to be a difference maker like a Ray Lewis or Urlacher. He is good at making tackles but he never seems to make a huge play.

Rhodes is a difference maker, I am fairly certain that Revis is going to be but Vilma no way. He makes tackles and is very good at coverage. However, in his 4 year career so far he has 5 int's, 5 forced fumbles and 2.5 sacks. That is no difference maker.

urlacher made his first sack since 05 against the chiefs...
if we improve the pass rush...a coverage lb like vilma will become a playmaker
