I sometimes have a hard time believing what I'm reading in this group. Look, we don't have a great offense. We have an offense that can pump it up against bad teams, like last year, but Fitz is and always has been an ok, middlin qb. What do ok middlin qb's do? Well, they make a great, clutch throw to the WR like the last one Marshall dropped, and then they follow it up with a bad throw to the outside, which should be high, but if not, at least behind the defender, not in front of him. I expected that if the Jets won, it would be 13-6, not a 40 point game. We need, and I think Bowles plans, to have a great defense and win the way Denver won last year (and it looks like this year too). I personally would rather see them develop another qb this year, but if they insist on "win now", they'd better work on some defensive things. So...the most troubling aspect of the game was the defense, not just the play but the calls. It's great to have a great defensive front, the sacks look spectacular, but it can't be one dimensional. A QB like Brady, for example, will just sight adjust and get the ball out quick and dink and dunk you to death. Cincinnati just went to the draw/timing-disrupt/pull the guards game and rendered the pass rush moot. The Jets D then did not adjust to Cincinnati. Why was that? I'm going to put it at the feet of the coaching staff, because they call the plays and prepare the players. The use of time outs was atrocious. I can't count the number of head coaches who fail to save their time outs for the end of the halves, but I hope Bowles is curable. The failed kicks were an embarrasment, and that I have to put on the coaches too because that's just lack of preparation. It's not too late, it's only one game. But if the i's aren't dotted and the t's aren't crossed, it's going to be a long season. Ron
It's crazy, we have some DBs who are great ballhawks but tackling is awful (Williams) and that hurt us a lot. AJ Green is just so good and the scheme just wasn't right to stop him. Cinci made some great adjustments to help their offense. Couple positives. Offensive line looked pretty good. Opened holes. Fitz didn't get hit much despite Cinci having a good d-line. And that defensive line? Holy shit. Six sacks from our d-line. SIX. And Sheldon Richardson didn't play. Can you imagine how huge of headaches our d-line will cause all year. Jesus.
We played fine today except for 5 or 6 plays. If we play like we did today minus those big plays we beat any team on any sunday 1) AJ Green touchdown. Help over the top??? When are we going to learn? 2) LaFell big 3rd and 18 grab which led to Hills touchdown run later that drive. Why the hell are we playing press man on 3rd and 18 with no help over the top, again? 3) Blocked FG was inexcusable 4) Folk missed XP was inexcusable 5) Horrible, horrible play calling in the redzone 6) Marshalls drop on that final drive was a dagger ANY of those 6 things go a different way and we leave JetLife with a win.
If you counted the points, The Offense would have scored 26 points against a good defense. That's not a good offense to you? and ftr, Here's a few things that were missed by some posters. Folk Did NOT miss a FG it was Blocked. The XP he missed was something of a fuking wind fluke..Watch the replay...it was dead center and the curve it took was some madden type bullshit but hey, we'll count that as a miss because he should know how to play the wind. Just one job Folk. Not going for it on 4th and 1 with your D-line playing lights out....AYFKM!!?? Safety Play and CB play was absolutely ATROCIOUS No Deep passes to stretch the field. (you have to go deep even if you don't want to) By the 4th Q they had 10 men around the box and 1 deep safety! The FG before the half should NOT have counted. Yes, they kicked it w/1 second left but were not set. That should have been a penalty on CINCY and with no time outs the runoff ends the half...add to the fact that we DID NOT have a guy lined up at NT/on the center so that was a Bullshit penalty. The good news is that most of these things will get fixed... hopefully that includes growing a pair.
In fact, we didn't score 26 points, we scored 22. And I don't think I want to count on field goals being made, I'd rather count on touchdowns. Last year the Jets scored 26 or more points 7 times. That's 9 times with fewer than 26. I wouldn't call that a good offense. In fact, of those 9 times, the most we scored was 23. We played a lot of poor defenses. Rank of Defense the Jets played last year in points per game allowed: Clev 29 w colts 25 w eagles 28 L Miami 19 W W Wash 17 W Pats 10 L W Oak 22 L Jck 31 W Buff 15 L Hou 7 L Giants 30 W Titans 27 W Cowboys 16 W If we're going to win, the defense has to be great. We lost by one point..... to me Folk is the reason we lost .I thought Fitz played a nice game until that last desperation throw. We may not have been in that position if Folk doesnt cost us 4 points.Even if he makes the Extra point we likely go to overtime. You guys are placing blame at all the wrong people. It would have been 26-23 Jets if Folk does his job.
Yeah, Folk was terrible, but the Jets were inside the ten three times and came away with only 6 points. To me, that was the story of this game, especially since the Jets were one of the highest ranked teams scoring from the red zone last year. The QB has to take some heat for that.
Some general comments: 1) People clamor for "help over the top" and "double coverage" as if you can play the exact same defense but with an extra defender. I'm no wizard with X's and O's, but if you want more "help" for this and that, you have to explain what you choose to sacrifice in the process. 2) Very easy to jump on Folk as well, but both misses were a bit freaky. When Nugent lined up for his long one, I thought, "Well, we saw what the wind did to Folk." And sure enough, Nugent's kick looked exactly the same. Whipped violently wide. 3) Not going for it on fourth and 1 looks badf in retrospect, but if we get a stop at the end, it's a comeback win and a moot point. Can you imagine the uproar if we just needed a chip shot to take the lead with 3 minutes left, and instead we go for it and don't get it!? This place would go insane. 4) Are we absolutely positive that Fitz didn't cross the plane??? Did I miss a replay? I might have. I was pretty wasted. Help me out here. edit: speaking of being wasted, I think I'm confusing my fourth downs. The fourth and very short wasn't the last FG drive, but the first-quarter drive. My bad. Disregard point #3. Or just disregard everything.
Very good point! I did not see a definitive replay on TV, but from the angle they showed, the ball could well have crossed the goal line. Not sure if the Jets even considered challenging it because they lined up for the next play pretty quickly. My beef is on the following play with the ball spotted on the 1/2 yd line.. Why not a QB sneak there? You have a QB not afraid of contact, an all-pro center and an O-line having a pretty good day.
