I've seen a couple of different posts about this, so maybe it has some legs. Thoughts? Please don't bitch about how we could have drafted him in the first place, that is a simple "it is what it is" situation.
It would all depend on what we had to give up... but this is probably the ceiling that we are looking at as far as a back-up QB. It is encouraging if true that the team realises Zach is no longer an option, but we will be hamstrung to some extent by the fact that Rodgers will not want anybody who is a genuine threat to establish themselves as a challenger to him. I can see an upside to Fields - his rushing ability would give us an option to pivot to a different kind of offense if/when Rodgers goes down... but that would require an offensive coordinator who is capable of working with anyone except Rodgers and we don't have one of those. Overall, I wouldn't get to worked up as long we only gave up minor draft capital. It all hinges on the offensive line rebuild anyway.
I like Justin, but I don't think draft capital will be minor. Fields has done enough where we may be looking at a second round pick. Kind of in the Sam territory comp wise when he was traded. There may be a market for him to compete for a starting job. Heck, I am not even sure the Bears are not going to keep him, though it does seem likely they will draft a QB with #1 and try to deal him. And we don't really have a lot of premium capital to trade away for short term: Fields' 5th year option is due soon and we might lose him as a FA after investing capital. Fields to the Jets just seems very unlikely. More likely scenario we try to trade Zach to get something for him and sign a Tannehill. For Zach I am not sure there will be market though, and in this case I would just keep him and maybe sign Wentz for relatively cheap to compete with him for back-up.
I like the guy so much better than ZW and still annoys me today. However, it’s “too late”, and already in deep shit to stick with AR in a win now mode 2024. just move on, trade some draft picks back for more high mid round picks and build the OL and WR. We can get a QB in mid round to learn from AR for a year. Let’s move forward and on, not go back couple of steps.
If you're the Jets and you're REALLY trying to go all in to win in 24-25, which at this point they've indicated they're doing and really shouldn't half ass it, then you explore this trade. May cost a future 1 or 2, but you would have a viable backup in case Rodgers gets hurt again AND you would MAYBE have a QB for beyond. This being the Jets, there's no way it would work out well but that's the logic in my eyes.
It depends on the price. If we can get him for a 4th I would definitely do it just because the value there. But even a 3d round pick is tough to give up though when we have so many holes at starting spots and we don't have a second. This is the place to get a OL or if it's a trade, then for a starting WR. Usually in this case if you trade 1 or 2 for him, you pick up his option (22 mil): https://overthecap.com/fifth-year-option-projections . That's something that we cannot afford at this point. Don't take me wrong, I really like Fields, and I don't think the book has been written on him. If the circumstances were different where we didn't have a starting QB for 2024, I would be all over it. But, as @MDJets said, this ship has sailed. Who knows, he may be a FA in 2025, and we may end up with him then, but now I just don't see it.
He's showed far more high ceiling flashes than Sam Darnold did and somehow we got a 2 and more for him. Someone will take a chance on him and it won't be as backup. So this is likely just bunk but makes for fun conversation.
We need to be acquiring capital not trading it, moreless give up picks for a 1 year backup. When Rodgers goes down again, is Fields going to lead our roster to the SB? Would JD be willing to eat all the crow this move requires? I don't think JD will make the trade and I don't think the Bears are taking a QB at #1.
I wouldn’t trade anything more than a 5th for Fields…he hasn’t been any good. Sure he’s broken some runs and that makes for a great highlight reel but as a passer he has sucked just about as bad as Zach has…pretty much the same ballpark. Hard pass for me
I don’t necessarily think the Bears should ride with Fields but I think they have the rare opportunity to trade the first overall pick with a supposed franchise QB available and not feel bad about it. Caleb and all that might come with him in terms of baggage scares me. And he’s also a fumbling machine in a very QB friendly system.
Bears traded #1 last year, and received: - the ninth-overall 2023 - a second-round 2023 - a first-round pick in 2024 (#1 overall) - a second-round pick in 2025 - DJ Moore (1000+ yards receiver). Basically they got #1 back with a strong QB class, and on top of it: #9 overall, two 2nd rounders, and 1000+ yards WR vet. That is a great deal, and now they can do this again if they want. That pick from last year keeps on giving.
I think the haul for this one would be even greater. I don’t think anyone put 5’4” Bryce Young in even a top 20-25 QB prospect of all time. As long as Caleb doesn’t flag himself too badly with character shit in the pre-draft process, his resume and profile is very similar and probably just slightly below Elway, Peyton, Luck, and Lawrence.
Caleb is not that big himself, listed 6-1, but will he even clear 6 feet? He is not Young's 5-10 (who was listed in College 6-0), but still short for an ideal prospect. You want to see 6-2 at minimum. Yes, he will go #1 and they can probably get more in trade than for Young, but QB height does matter at NFL level. Not too many short ones are super successful.
JV Is Caleb really that good? When I watched him in 2 games he didn't look anything special. This is a high praise coming from you.
