Pro football : Stommes tastes NFL dream in Big Apple By Andy Marso • amarso@stcloudtimes • May 9, 2010 As the plane descended through the clouds and the bridges, high-rises and traffic-choked streets of New York City sprawled out before him, one thing became clear to Matt Stommes: He was a world away from the dairy farm in Richmond, where he grew up. Stommes, a graduate of Eden Valley-Watkins High School and a senior offensive tackle for the University of Minnesota Gophers, signed a free-agent contract with the New York Jets on April 26 and reported to the Big Apple for minicamp three days later.“It was my first time in southeastern New York and New York City,” Stommes said. “It was quite impressive flying in and seeing all the big buildings and the Statue of Liberty and everything.
