They really have nothing to sort out. Mangini has continued to say that there is an open competition, it was Hutchinson who is claiming it to be a done deal from his "unamed source".....
From the point of everyone concerned with being the starting QB it should be sorted out. What if we go into pre-season without clear winner , then what a play-off? For the sake of the QB and the teambuilding/bonding it has to be done by end of TC at the latest. I'm all for open competition but there has to be a cutoff point , we don't know when that is , does anyone other Tangini?
Oh I totally agree the sooner this decision is made the better. I was just talking about today's report, this didn't officially come from the team so they have nothing to clear up. I hate these so called un-named sources, it is such a cop out. Realistically, I think we'll hear something official from Mangini either just before, or soon after the first pre-season game...
Hutchinson said his source was a high-level team official. I have to admit at first I was a bit skeptical of the entire story. I haven't heard of many teams deciding a quarterback battle after less than a week of practice. Not even a single preseason game. But I chalked it up to the fact that Mangini was going outside the box again and going with the early favorite to get him as much snaps with the first team as possible. My hunch is the battle has already been decided in Mangini's head and the job has now become Pennington's to lose.
Hutchinson's update from his Blog Wednesday, August 02, 2006 Scoop irks coach As some of you may have heard, Chad Pennington is your guy this season. And he won by a landslide. The Star-Ledger broke the story in today?s edition and Jets coach Eric Mangini, who is a control freak, is none too pleased. He wanted to stretch out this so-called competition as long as possible, but the charade is over for all intent and purposes. Sure, Mangini will continue to rotate the quarterbacks, but that?ll be largely to preserve Pennington?s arm. As I said, the competition wasn?t close and it took Pennington just eight practices to score a knockout over Patrick Ramsey, who was his chief rival. The only question is can Pennington stay healthy for 16 games. Earlier this morning, the Jets called each of the beat writers to tell us that Mangini has moved back the practice time from 2 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. It was a start move because temperatures are expected to be approaching 100 degrees. Also, there are rumors that Mangini may give his players Friday off. It would be their first off day. I?m rooting hard for that. -Hutch
I heard a sound bite from Mangini on the radio, vehemently denying that Penigton is the guy. Jury is still out on this one, although Hutch is easilly the best jets beat reporter in NY.
^^^^ You got that right. I still believe that Pennington won the job. As long as these 40 yard balls he's throwing aren't going as high as punts, he's a good qb. It sounds like Mangini just doesn't want the info to be out yet, but in his mind and the entire FO, its Pennignton.
I agree. Here are some quotes from Mangini's press conference today. I think the whole thing is up on the team site but I can't listen to realmedia from work  ?I know a common question when I come in here is progress on the quarterbacks and it?s the same today as it was yesterday,? Mangini said to reporters. ?There is really no difference there. You will see the same rotation that we always had and the same amount of reps. Really that hasn?t changed at all and it won?t change until someone consistently distinguishes himself. That is where the timetable is at.? ?I believe someone has to win that spot, someone has to win each of these spots,? he said. ?As soon as somebody does, that is going to be the point when we make a decision. But until then it?s going to be open.? http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/articles/show_article?short_name=news&article_id=811
After listening to Mangini on ESPN 1050 and reading Hutchinson's article - my take is: Yes, Pennington will be the starting QB barring some unfortunate problem - but that Mangini is not ready to make that public. The good thing is the team will prepare with Penny #1 but Mangini can continue to rotate QB's and save Penny's arm.
Remember this story the next time reporters whine, bitch, moan, and complain about the Jets' lack of info to them. Gloating over my team's head coach's anger about losing a possible strategic edge due to a media leak -- this is supposed to be IN MY NAME AND ON MY BEHALF AS A JETS FAN ? No thanks.... I hope Friday's practice is inside the air-conditioned bubble...and the press can stand outside and look in....
