I used to be a hardcore Knicks fan in the 90s and early 2000s. I had no problems with that franchise during the Ewing era, because we had a legit franchise player and built around him. We never won the big one, but had some chances during that time, and were a real championship contender. Once Ewing started getting older, I saw a different approach from Dolan and the Knicks ownership. They kept bringing in good veterans, first around Ewing and then as the core of the team. I didn't understand this approach at all. As a true fan, I wanted to build a championship contender again, not some middle of the road team not going anywhere. So that's when I first heard Dolan's rationale, often repeated by radio personalities and some fans, which is basically the notion that you cannot really rebuild teams in NYC. Fans are more impatient than in other places, and Dolan was very interested in businessmen coming to MSG to watch competitive games, who didn't really care much about the Knicks as championship contenders. They just wanted an entertaining product. I was pretty upset by this. I just feel like true fans want a true winner, not some short term entertainment BS. I also felt like those 2 goals often contradict each other. To rebuild, you need to take chances on young unproven players, and give them time to develop, whereas to have a product that's always entertaining, unless you are the Lakers, you just bring in second tier veteran players from other teams. When the Knicks traded away a top 10 pick for Antonio McDyess, I've had it with them, and stopped following the team, at least until Dolan stops being the owner. I could not have been happier with my decision on this in over a decade since then. Just as I thought, the Knicks kept bringing in these big names like Francis, Marbury, Stoudemire, and Anthony, and have done absolutely zilch as far as being serious contenders. Why did I bring this up here? Because watching many Jets fans whine about Idzik and Woody right now, I can see that a lot of them are just clamoring for the Knicks approach. These fans are upset that we tried to give a potential franchise QB a chance to develop over the last 2 years, and it didnt work out. They are upset that we didn't spend all our cap money on some players that are either average or dont fit the long-term building plan. Most of all, they just can't take the idea of sacrificing a year or two to build your team up the right way, instead of the GM focusing entirely on winning right now, at all costs. So watching this, maybe Dolan and those people that said you can't rebuild in NY were right. But if that's the case, those of you who fit this impatient fan profile, maybe you are getting exactly what you deserve with owners like Dolan. And maybe if you keep screaming about the Jets long enough, Woody is gonna start listening to you and turn into Dolan #2. I hope not, but it would be very fitting.
Rebuilding isn't pretty. I like Idzik's approach and IMO it's the right thing to do. Building through the draft makes sense. Now we have to hope that the players pan out. It's too early to judge one way or the other.
Nothing like an open ended rebuild to guarantee success. Lets give the Idzik and Rex all the time they need. Lets see, Rex is on year 6 and Idzik on year 2. So, if by year 10 Rex still hasn't produced a SB calibre team do we extend him again? What about Idzik? Do we give him 6-10 years too? Where does this end assuming it does have a lifespan shorter than the 45 years since the last Jet SB.
I would be very patient with a rebuild..but my teams (Jets, Mets, Devils) never seem to actually rebuild. If someone told me that they needed 3 years of losing or at the most averageness to be able to put a playoff-worthy product on the field I would sign for that all day everyday. But that never happens. Its always just quick fixes (Jets, Devils) or offseasons of nothing (Mets) So yea I would love to know what an actual rebuild looks like.
Who says Rex is getting fired? The Jets make decisions as a collective. Rex was brought back with the idea that this would be a rebuilding team. There was enough talent that if things broke our way we could've competed.
It doesn't matter what a lot of people think. The FO wants to keep Rex and he'll be here. Decker, Kerley, Amaro, Nelson, Ivory, Powell, good front 7, Milliner, Pryor etc. But some of those players regressed, got hurt or had growing pains.
I think it would be dumb to fire Rex, but I think he will be gone at the end of the year. Idzik should be the one fired. IMO.
I like the idea of rebuilding. I like what Idzick did with the cap and that includes keeping rollover money. I like that we kept and used all 12 picks in this year's draft. But there needs to be a correlation between freeing up the money and being able to spend it wisely. Same with the draft. I don't think our FO has what it takes to bring in the personnel appropriate for this team.
Agreed. I never wanted Idzik, but was willing to give him some time since I liked his basic philosophy and how he straightened out the cap. It's early, but right now it looks like he's not a good evaluator of talent and didn't give Rex much to work with this year. I think they need to clean house and start over, and the GM had better be a personnel guy, not a cap guru or Administrator.
It's unfair to lump them together like that though. The rebuilding started when Idzik came aboard. Rex's first 4 years weren't about rebuilding, they were about winning now. So really it hasn't even been 2 years yet in our rebuilding process, and everyone is already freaking out. As far as what's a reasonable amount of time, I think 3 years for a new GM is the bare minimum, and 4 is certainly not unreasonable. If at the end of those 3-4 years you don't see good results in terms of young talent and general winning, then the GM has failed. But midway through his 2nd year? No one will even want to come here at that rate. Good teams need continuity. We have plenty of talent. Team's overall record is not indicative of its talent. You take Manning off the Broncos or Brady off the patriots, and suddenly they won't look 1/5th as good. You have Manning throwing to Decker, Harvin, Kerley and Amaro, suddenly they'll look like the greatest show on earth. But as far as overall talent, we might not be the most talented team in league, but we have lots of nice pieces. Wilkerson, Richardson, and Snacks obviously. Demario Davis is looking good this year, and while he might not be consistent, Coples does flash talent from time to time. Once Pryor moves to SS, he will probably look very talented. If Milliner is healthy, he has a ton of talent. On offense, we now have a very decent receiving corp, with Harvin, Decker, Kerley, and Amaro. Mangold is the #1 ranked Center in the league according to PFF. Ivory is one of the best running backs in the league. How is that not talent? No, I stay with bad teams (like the Jets ). But when a team's goal is to just provide an entertaining product and not to win a championship, I am gone. To me that's like a relationship. You stay with a person through tough times, but if they cheat on you, you leave. A team that doesn't try to win championships is cheating on its fans.
Knicks won 50 plus games 2 years ago had a pretty bad last year and are looking up with Phil at the helm they will be a contender hopefully next year As for the Jets I have no argument to make we just suck
Man get the fuck outta here with this topic. We are only fans - Everyone on the Jets is doing a fucking awful job and should be castrated for their actions. If I did a shitty attempt at doing my job, I should get the axe also.
