If you have to pin it to one single player on either side, who would it be?

    I'd say it's a toss-up between Hunter and Smith.

    santonio holmes and smith

i just can't stand the fact that when he fumbled that first ball, the jets D had already stopped the eagles offense and we were on our way to a nice drive, and after all that, when we have the chance to get right back in the game he screws it up again

I know the team isnt supposed to give up after 14-0 in the first quarter, but the fact that it came from two turnovers during two drives with a lot of potential just kills it

Santonio. We at least get 3 after the muffed punt and its a different game. I believe for the Jets more than most teams, a good start will win us a game. Burying us lets us see the worst of Schotty, Sanchez, and our O line.

Has to be holmes. We were moving the ball well on that first drive. If holmes doesn't turn the ball over twice spotting the eagles 14 and taking away at least 3 for us then it's an entirely different game. Then we can stick to the run and hunter doesn't have to block babin on obvious passing downs the entire game.

Santonio Holmes wasn't prepared to play and the whole tone of the game changed based on that.

You know who is to blame for this Undisciplined team that is hit or miss from week to week. .........? That would be Rex Ryan and Brian Shothisloader. I know there are Players on this team who play their hearts out and others who simply do not have the skill set to hang in the NFL.
This is the team Rex and Co. have fielded and we are in the same situation we find ourselves every single year. We can still pull it out and make the play off's , but is that really going to fix the problem??

Tannenbaum for thinking he could go into the season with Hunter and Smith as starters.

Yup. Obviously certain players (Hunter, Smith, Moore, Pace, etc.) have underperformed or flat out sucked, but at the end of the day this team isn't constructed for a serious playoff run.

Thank you. This is the correct answer. Along with thinking we could get the same production from Plax as we got from Braylon.

FWIW, Plax has dwarfed Braylon's numbers (even when you take Braylon's injuries into account.)

Hunter, Ryan, Holmes in that order. Can't really point out a definitive singular but they all deserve a portion of the blame.

I don't say this lightly, because there was plenty of blame to go around for the loss. But it deserves noting that those who place primary blame on Eric Smith do not know much about the game of football.

Smith at worst shared responsibility with Harris for the actually smart play Celek made turning his route upfield for the post, and Harris later took sole blame for that play. Meanwhile, that was it for negative plays. Smith also had five tackles, and none of which this time were on his assignment after making a first down. So, in effect, Smith was not responsible for ANY negative plays.

I think there's a tendency to ignore that the linebackers in fact have a responsibility, depending on the defensive scheme, to cover the opponent's TE. Celek's earlier big play, the TD, was in fact where he beat Bart Scott. The nearest db over the top on that play was Kyle Wilson, not Smith. Yet no one is bitching and moaning about him.

It's just an urban legend that Smith is so bad. I am not sure how that got started. I know he's not the fastest db in the league, but on the big gainer by Celek, he was too far out of the play on what was Harris's assignment to catch up to Celek.

Fwiw I think the tendency to look for individuals to serve as scapegoats is the end result of failing to recognize that the overall quality of the roster is perhaps not as great as we had hoped. After all, when considering the issue I really do have with this team, the palpable weakness covering TE's, who can deny that the Jet linebackers, as a group, are not particularly fast?

Rather than accepting the implication that the Jet linebackers are poor in pass coverage, let's all dump on a single player, Smith, and conclude we'd be in the land of milk and honey if the Jets only got rid of him. I don't think so.

The fact is that this D was built, as a conscious decision, to stop the run. The front seven were chosen to play that style first and foremost. There's no reason why a linebacker of similar height and weight to an opponent's TE can't keep up with him, but we don't see much in the way of good pass coverage from any of the Jet linebackers.

That is not Eric Smith's fault. Please show a bit more football knowledge.
