Good news and bad news. Bad news first, no Kyle Wilson or Devin McCourty for the Jets... sigh. Good news, the Jets filled a need without using any of the Jets 5 draft picks, OUTSTANDING. The question pops up now though what moves into the space of the top need. Here's my little breakdown of the position needs that remain, and where they should be ranked. RB- Greene's on board, but Leon may not be. Either way, they need to add a back to pair with Shonny. The good thing is that the draft is very deep at the position, and the Jets have a lot of freedom in terms of what kind of back to add because of Greene's skillset. Rather than designate a round, I'd just say try to find value, though I'm leaning towards saying 1 or 2 at this point. WR- Slot receiver, and a slot receiver alone. I'll make this one easy, the Jets should target a small handful of guys they feel will be good fits, and pray one of them is there in Rd 5. OT/OG- I combined them because I'm not sure they can afford to add both positions unless they add picks. They need to think in terms of finding guys with potential, because they might be looking at their 2011 starter. Wouldn't hate to see this addressed in Rd 2. DE- The exact need here is a strange one, because I would also accept taking a young nose tackle that has the ability to play End. They just need youth on the line, and it would just be too much of a risk with all they've done for the back eight to not fortify their 3 man line. Douglas should honestly be brought back, but if he's not the need gets magnified. I can't honestly say it's a first round need, but the Jets have limited options with their picks. NT- Jenkins and Pouha are both getting up there, and they need that youth here. Their high level of effectiveness, however, is the big reason that I think I would prefer to grab a Nose of the future with the athleticism to also play end in this scheme. OLB- The Jets need a passrusher, badly. How often have Jet fans heard that? Well, they still have to find one, and I don't care if it's a stud or a guy that can only really play when it's as a situational rusher late in the draft. This draft is VERY deep at the position, they can find a good guy late, though I might prefer to pick up a future starter early. CB- WHAAAAAA??? Yeah, the Jets still need to develop a cornerback. Lowery is not entrenched as a good #3 corner, but at this point probably isn't in the plans as a starter of the future. Wouldn't hurt to grab a kid to bring along as the 4/5 corner/special teamer. Rankings: 1. OLB 2. RB (Leon goes and it becomes #1) 3. DE/NT 4. OG/OT 5. WR 6. CB
If Wilson or McCourty is BPA when teh Jets are on the clock, I would really have no problem in the Jets making that pick.
yeah..i alluded to this in the Cromartie Impact thread. my rankings are similar to yours, GH....with some subtle differences. OLB OG/OT DE/NT HB WR CB
Great post. Swap 1/2 and I'm right with you. I love what we did with the running game last year, and considering Sanchez is still developing, I think we'll need to lean heavily on the run again. Good news is our O-line is still intact to do this, bad news is we're now without TJ. We need someone to fill that role, at least in partial capacity. RB is no. 1 priority, IMO, and if Leon goes, 29 is a deadlock for a RB (barring trade or FA pickup). Then, DE/OLB is the next obvious need. Thankfully, there's plenty of talent in this draft to fill this need in round 2 or 3. Beyond that, it's all about depth and/or the value pick when we're OTC.
For me, DE is definitely the biggest need right now. We cut Douglas, so we're left with DeVito, who's fine but probably more of a backup. Either way, with Jenkins and Ellis both in their 30s, we definitely should go for a lot of DL depth in this draft. It's the oldest part of our team. I think we could also obviously use a pass rusher, but could survive with what we have now. Pace was a beast last season and will get to play a full year this time around, and Thomas is decent. I'm assuming Leon will be here - I can't see anyone giving up a 2nd for him, but you never know. If so, I think a veteran would be better than another young back to go with Shonn and Leon. Also agree on the OL depth, but that can come in the later rounds - I think we'll focus on finding Faneca/Woody's replacements with 1st/2nd rounders in 2011 & 12's drafts, but we're ok if we don't get their eventual replacements this year. WR really only makes sense if it's at 29, even a late second would probably still only be a #4 WR on the depth chart - and with the other needs we have, #4 WR shouldn't be much of a priority.
1. Pass rushing OLB 2. DE 3. RB 4. slot WR 5. RB 6. TE 7. OT/OG 8. NT 9. CB Really, the top two needs are the biggest, and you could make a good case for any of the next 7 positions after that. Go value.
But then the question arises when you start looking for a guy that can get to the Quarterback: Do you go early for someone with a more developed overall skillset, who is looked as as a legitimate future starter? Or do you wait and take a kid in the later rounds that is viewed as a pure, situational passrusher and try and develop him? They'd probably end up having similar first years, but the similarites end there.
I really dont see an OLB being taking high, Adalius Thomas will be signed and Rex is still invested in Gholston somewhat. Golden Tate is really who i see us picking now, I like Benn better as a prospect but remember how we almost got Percy Harvin last year, Tate is the closest thing to Percy this year so i see Tanny getting this guy
1.OLB/WR 2.DE I know WR isn't the biggest need but I know they are going to get Sanchez weapons just don't know when...
Edwards, Cotchery, Keller, Leon, top end running game. He needs a slot WR. that's it. lets understand that another big WR isn't needed. Randel El would be a fine slot guy to fill the Stuckey role.
I'd still love to see us trade back and take a RB and OLB in the 2nd. I think the depth is there for the former, anyway, and depending on how people feel about Gibson, it should be there for the latter, too.
Wouldn't mind the former in the slightest. I don't want the latter. If we take a receiver, I'd prefer 3rd day.
Ah. I thought you were offering your opinion on our 1st and 2nd, not on a RB/OLB pair. I've heard so much Golden and I'm sick of it . I have to admit, if we end up sliding back and using our first 2nd rounder on an OLB, I'd really want to use our original pick on Toby. Tate would be a good complement for Greene, though.
