Docs recommend delay of Williams' NFL reinstatement By Chris Mortensen ESPN.com Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams tested positive for marijuana in April and will not be allowed to apply for reinstatement to the NFL until September, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Williams was suspended last year for violation of the substance abuse policy and was eligible to be reinstated this month, but the league's medical advisors that oversee Williams' personal rehabilitation program recently notified commissioner Roger Goodell of the positive test, sources said. The doctors also recommended that Williams not be allowed to apply for reinstatement until September, sources said. The commissioner usually adheres to the advice of the medical advisors under the substance abuse policy. "Falling off the wagon is part of rehab," a source said. "Based on the medical evidence in Ricky's case, the doctors say it's too early to come back. He had the positive test last month. Remember, he's been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder -- that's a real disease and a good percentage of those folks self-medicate with substances like marijuana, often at the moment they are about to have a high level of social interaction." League spokesman Greg Aiello said the NFL would have no comment, as did Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene. David Cornwell, an attorney who has represented Williams during his substance abuse cases, said he would honor the confidentiality policies in effect with another no comment. is the guy behind ricky the guy from heroes? observing the weedman seriously though i have a drug test on monday for my company
A lot of the time it's easy to pile on somebody when they appear to be doing really stupid things. If Ricky Williams actually has a definable disorder and there's little doubt that it's at the root of his marijuana addiction then the NFL should be working with him and the doctors to find a workaround to the problem. There has to be a legal anti-anxiety medication out there that would take the edge off enough for him to function in society. I recognize that substance abuse is often caused by underlying factors and that the ramifications of it can be severe, as in the drunk driver, however it's starting to feel to me like Ricky's gotten caught up in a witchhunt while the authorities apparently have been aware of the triggering condition for awhile. If the NFL is going to have a policy that excludes somebody from the league for what amounts to a misdemeanor in many jurisdictions they also should have an aggressive solution-finding process if that misdemeanor appears to be beyond the control of the individual and also preventable. This is an image thing. Marijuana use is punishable at the NFL level (as distinct from the criminal justice system) because the NFL wants to project a positive image for it's young fans. Well, it does not project a positive image when the NFL hounds a player out of the game for something that basically harms nobody but himself and appears also to be beyond his control. Note that Ricky Williams has never been arrested for drug possession (or anything else that I could find.) He got busted by a random drug test.
It's fuckin WEED...it has relatively no medical toxicity...no LD50...a.k.a. impossible to overdose because it is not a toxic substance...there is no lethal dosage...compare that to alcohol, asprin, or tylenol...all substances deemed OK by the gov and safe for children...what a crock of shit...GROW UP AMERICA!!!
holy crap. Wow. And he claimed he hadn't done it in 3 years. I doubt he'll be reinstated in September, either.
I'm by no means an expert, but I don't think there really is medication that can treat severe cases of anxiety long term. There are SSRIs/anti-depressants but they can only treat minor cases. Then you have Benzodiazipines like Xanax and Klonopin and such that work well, but they are ridiculously physically addictive to the point where it can become near impossible to get off them. The withdrawal is pretty similar to opiates, except it can kill you. Pot may be illegal, but it's 1000 times better for you than legal benzos.
ok the legalize it stuff aside, if i'm ronnie brown, and the phins take this guy back in september i'd demand a trade.
What makes you think that it's the toxicity of pot that makes it illegal? It's illegal becuase our government can't tax the shit becuase you can grow the shit yourself for free.
anyone see this foolishness again... MIAMI (AP) - Former NFL rushing champion Ricky Williams tested positive again for marijuana last month, delaying his return to the league until at least September, a person familiar with the case said Friday. Williams sought to end a one-year drug suspension last month when he asked to rejoin the Miami Dolphins. But following the positive drug test, clinicians in the program advised NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to delay reinstatement, the person close to the case said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the confidential nature of the testing program. The Dolphins and the NFL declined comment. Before Williams' latest setback, new Miami coach Cam Cameron repeatedly declined to say whether he would welcome Williams back. Leigh Steinberg, Williams' agent, did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment. Williams, who turns 30 on May 21, was suspended in April 2006 by the NFL after violating the league's drug policy for the fourth time. He played last year in the Canadian Football League, then taught yoga in California. Last month, Steinberg quoted Williams as saying his interest in eastern philosophy had overcome his desire for mind-altering substances. Williams won the 1998 Heisman Trophy at Texas and the 2002 NFL rushing championship with the Dolphins, but he has played only 12 games since 2003. Last season with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL, he rushed for 526 yards in 109 carries but missed two months with a broken arm :finssuck: ricky williams :breakdance:
How is career in the NFL can NOT be over is beyond me. This guy is toast. May he revel in a trip weed-induced stupor for the rest of his days (probably what he had in mind all along).
Unless of course, NFL fields are made of his type of grass. This is the most ridiculous guy in sports, really. I am all in favor of decriminalizing pot, and I too think athletes should be punished for it as often as they're punished for drinking or bimbo chasing....never. But society is what it is, and the NFL rules are what they are. If you want to play, you have to play by the rules. He's not big enough to the sport to rebel against it. If Peyton Manning was smoking, the NFL might re-consider its stance and put pot in the same category as beer booze and broads which are all accepted lifestyle choices. Ricky still has a jones for football which was evident when he made the trip north last year. He could've toured with Ben Harper or Lenny Kravitz instead of risking life and limb for the Canadian Football League. I'm sure his bills would have been taken care of with the other roadies. But he suited up and played for...help me out here. The Argonauts? That's about the only team I can even name from the CFL off the top of my head. The NFL can afford to give him the most money for his value and his skills. He's still a good running back, any way you look at it. Maybe not great, but good enough to earn big bucks. At least as good as Lamont Jordan and we all know what he's getting paid for The Commitment to Excrement. You'd think he'd just put the peace pipe down for a couple of years, earn as much as he can again and THEN blow smoke back at the NFL's face with millions in his pockets again. Shit, he could smoke one blunt on the way into the bank and another on the way out. He refuses to make the sacrifice to enjoy the privilege he's been given of having this talent, and a desire to play football at the highest level. It's a team game, and Ricky is apparently only concerned about Team Ricky. If you want to smoke pot and have a different career, do it. But don't smoke pot and pretend you're still serious about being a football player again someday. He's as selfish as they come. They should just ban him forever at this point, let him live his life off the football field and be done with it. I'm sick of hearing about selfish, stubborn players who are too ignorant to just STFU and play the game.
His chronic must be some shit from African decent straight from the fresh Ethiopian soil for him to be passing up 500K a year.
Isn't it pretty obvious that Ricky just doesn't want to play? If he could get out from under the signing bonus he pissed away, he'd never be going through any of this horse and pony bullshit.
1. A number of state troopers have told me the biggest hurdle in legalizing pot is finding a test for it while driving that shows current intoxication. 2. Dr. Troy, good rant, but you really can't discount someone's social anxiety disorder...I and people I know have done some really weird shit because of anxieties related to crowds...I mean, the guy used to do interviews with his visored helmet on, give him a break, obviously he has some kind of medical situation...and he is willing to give up millions to medicate himself? That's not a sane individual and he deserves the same treatment that everyone else in America needs...the ricky thing is a symptom of the larger cultural misunderstanding of psychological maladies. 3. Because of all the things in #2, he just may be reinstated...I may be wrong, but since he is technically not a part of the NFL right now, a failed drug test does not mean he has violated for the third time...I believe a failed test after reinstatement would accomplish that. A.k.a. you're on for a beer scikotics...at the Jets game in miami this year!
