Name: Paul Williams School: Fresno St Height: 6'1" Weght: 205lbs Speed: 4.45 Current Position: WR He came to Fresno St as a highly touted CB/WR. During his redshirt freshman year, he played CB on the scout team. However, once his redhirt year was over he was asked to play WR due to team needs. Although he played both positions in HS, he came to Fresno St to be a CB. As he has expressed several times during his collegiate career, CB is the postions he prefers to play and the position he feels most comfortable in. It's in his his blood; it's the position that both his older brothers played in college before him. Many scouts believe that he is the most talented of the William brothers; this is a significant when you consider that one of his brothers, James Williams, was a mid-1st Round draft pick of the Bills back in 1990. His other brother Curtis was also a pretty good CB for the Washington Huskies before sustaining an injury that paralyzed and later killed him. Based on his physical talents Paul has certainly underacheived as a WR but I think if a team were to grant him his wish of playing defense, it would reap some huge dividends. The guy reminds me a lot of Ken Lucas, who started his career in Mississippi as WR and later switched over to defense. I think he's worth some serious consideration on day 2 as a project. If you want to transition from WR to CB, what better coach to have than the man who helped turn Troy Brown into a pretty good nickel back.
...this is the worst idea/thread ever Paul Williams is a great receiver and he won't be around on day 2. he will probably be selected in the middle of the 2nd round. he didn't really underachieve as a wideout at Fresno State either, he was hurt the majority of his senior year and he played in a run-it-first offense under Pat Hill. This is just stupid.
Middle of the 2nd round? I doubt it... My guess would be late 3rd into the early 5th round. I don't like the idea of drafting him to play CB or WR. I haven't heard good things about this guy.
http://www.draftace.com/profiles/2007/paul_williams.htm "Williams has everything you want in a receiver from a physical standpoint, but he just never got it done on the field. He averaged just three catches per game as a senior and only saw the end zone once. He entered the season as a potential first rounder, but has fallen out of consideration for the first day all together. He still looks like a decent early second day prospect with some upside if a team is willing to put forth the effort to develop him." http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/2007/williams_paul "Solid wrap-up tackler who might be a better fit at cornerback, where he can use his speed and long arms to combat receivers for the ball (acknowledges that he would prefer to play defense)... ...Ken Lucas, Carolina ? Williams just does not impress as a receiver, as you can plainly see he is not happy on offense. With his previous experience and family bloodlines on defense, he would be better served playing cornerback, but needs to sit down and do a gut-check to see if he has the heart to play the game... http://insider.espn.go.com/nfldraft/draft/tracker/player?id=11274&draftyear=2007&univLogin02=stateChanged "Williams has always possessed outstanding natural athleticism but he is a career underachiever. He took steps backwards as a senior in 2006, when he struggled to stay healthy and often times looked to be going through the motions as a route-runner on offense. Williams has enough talent to spend a fourth or fifth round pick on him, but he's a long-term project (at wide receiver or possibly defensive back) and he comes with lots of baggage." Has the measurables to be a first day guy. A lot will depend on his combine numbers. Right now he looks like a late-3rd-to-early-5th type of guy. "Williams has been so besieged with inconsistency that he's privately questioned his own interest in remaining at receiver, instead preferring to try his hand at cornerback in the future. While Williams has the athleticism to make this transition, the sudden change of heart is an immediate red flag for scouts and is his drop in numbers." Yeah you are right; this is stupid:wink:
That was written before Williams' great showing at the Senior Bowl and in the Shrine Game...he also ran fast at the combine. It probably put himself back into day 1 with his performances... Moving him to another position just because his brothers played well at it is a STUPID idea. So I am right.
Not quite. There were never any questions about his speed. So that the fact that he ran fast means nothing really. Secondly, RIF (Reading Is Fundamental); I was not suggesting to move him to another position because his brothers played there. I suggested it because that's the position he has mentioned on several occasions he'd rather play. I'm not going to dwell any furhter with this because I can already see you're an idiot so as you were.
