Not sure how many people listen to Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller on XM, but they spent the day at Jets camp yesterday watching, observing and doing interviews. Pretty good stuff and they are usually very honest and have good insight. Some highlights from listening to their 3 hour show/assessment of the Jets:

Geno - Since he is really what makes or breaks this team let me start here. Said he is CLEARLY the best QB on the roster. Said he throws the ball with a lot more velocity then they thought but of course, accuracy was an issue at times. Threw inside shoulder sometimes when the throw should heave ben outside etc. Also said he is running more when things aren't there instead of throwing the ball up for grabs or holding it too long. Did say there was one crossing route to Decker that he threw back shoulder which looked like a bad throw but Cro was on top of the route and it was the right decision by Geno, just slightly under thrown. Kiran said fans were moaning about him being so inaccurate and he wanted to tell them to shut up because that was the right throw but didn't. Most importantly they said Geno's demeanor seemed vastly different. More confident, had a couple bad plays and didn't look like they affected him compared to the past. They interviewed Geno and he did sound like a different player. Before everyone jumps up and says "wait and see" or "let's calm down until game starts" I get it.....don't shoot the messenger just passing along information.

Fitz - says he must still be injured because he was throwing up some balloons. Doesn't seem to to be able to drive the ball at all.

Leonard Williams - looks like the real deal. Very athletic, can play right away but hopes the coaches aren't relying on him full time. Hopes he can rotate and will be more effective. Spending a lot of time with Bowen, is glued to him all the time asking him questions. They also loved the fact that in a drill a veteran (went unnamed) tried to bully him after the whistle and Leonard didn't back down. One upped the vet and pushed him around and flattened him. Leonard knew what they were talking about in the interview and said vets try to test him but he isn't having it,

Defense - they were in awe of the D. Says this D is built to stop Brady. Says you can expect a lot of turnovers, defensive scores this year. They were blitzing and confusing the offense like crazy. They say the offense won't see many defenses like this at all this year so if they have success against this D they will be good. BUT can see this hurting the offenses confidence so Chan will have to manage that. The D will not let them have anything,

Demario Davis - one of their favorite players. Think he has all the tools to take a big step. Had a great interview with him an he said some interesting things regarding Sheldon. I am paraphrasing but it was like "Sometimes, player will finally listen to som of the things you say when they get in trouble. I haven't changed my approach at all. I've always said the same things to him but now that he is in trouble, he is starting to listen." Made me think there were signs of Sheldon going this route early on and Demario was trying to warn him and he didn't listen.

Buster Skrine - another guy they really like. Versatility, plays hard and will be all over the placed and used like Tyronne Mathieu.

Gilchrist - players were raving about his smarts and awareness. Said he was hurt on the sidelines one day and was calling out every single play and play design before the play happened. Also talked about his versatility.

Mauldin - needs work. Demario says he has two really good pass rush moves (which he said is all you really need in the league to be effective) but Kiran saw him getting frustrated working against Brick (who looked great according to these guys) Maudin tried a move and the Vet dropped his hips and stoned him,

Petty - no where close. He was swimming. He is not ready or even close to ready to playing NFL football. Was confused about everything he saw and needs a couple years.

Corners - embarrassment of riches, love the depth.

RB - love the depth can see Mac making a move at the end of preseason to move one of these guys. Same with guard.

WR - concerned about Marshall during the season if h isn't seeing 120 - 130 targets. Feel he can unravel but the WR coach and Bowles have experience with him and will have to proactively manage him.

Coaches - feel the Jets have one of the most experienced staffs in the league. Said probably one of th main reasons Bowles was hired because he put ego aside and brought in experienced coaches. Say a lot of new coaches make the mistake of bringing in younger coaches with them because they don't want to be overshadowed. Said the veteran coaches will make a HUGE difference in developing young players. Said Gailey and April are critical for Bowles success.

Bowles and Mac - like what they have done, thinks Bowles is perfect for this mix of vets and rooks. They seem to be in sync and working together which again, makes a huge difference on how the team carries themselves.

They had Leberfeld from Jets Confidential on (hate that guy) and he was killing Geno and thinks Ryan Fitz given them a better chance to win. I don't hate him because of this statement btw just hate him.

Those are the highlights from the 3 hours they spent there. Said the schedule isn't bad and this team should win 9-10 games.

Brick is a master at his craft. He might not be as flashy as some of the LTs in the league but you'll have a hard time finding more than 2-3 tackles who are as consistent and as good in pass protection. He rarely, if ever, gets beat. And that's against NFL starters, Pro Bowl caliber players. Mauldin can only learn and get better by facing Brick.

    Thanks for the writeup!

Marshall is going to be interesting... if he turns into another Santonio Holmes while Geno is stinking it up, this is going to be another long season. On the other hand, if he brings out of Geno what we have yet to see, this will likely be a very fun season.

It seems like the job really is Geno's to lose. I'm sure the team will do what it can to limit his opportunities to disintegrate. Still worried about RG.

I'm starting to believe maybe Geno has actually made some improvement. Fingers crossed. Need to see him on the screen.

Wonder which 'veteran' was flattened by Big Cat on the bully fail? Lol.

Sounds like one of the G's, maybe Giacomini.

    Would've loved to see that

Yeah it was funny to hear. Kirwan said "One of the veteran lineman, and I'm not going to say who it was...."

It's amazing how so many people believed Brick was one of our worst lineman last year. It truly is hilarious. Hopefully Maudlin doesn't get discouraged, Brick allowed I think 1 sack last yr.

Can you learn anticipation and drill up your reaction time? Because Geno needs both of those things functioning at a much higher level than they have been in the past.

The best bet that we have for Geno to have a really good season is that Chan Gailey goes to a 1-read spread and gives him an outlet on the same side.

People that dont understand what they're watching..... as his only "bad" seasons were when he was essentially doing "double duty" trying to compensate for the turd next to him. Last time was the season before Faneca / post Pete Kendall fiasco
