One of the greatest comedic actors of the early television era. Your Show of Shows ran for only a short time in the early to mid-50's but it spawned a generation of comedy writers and memes that lasted for decades. Among the writers on the show in it's 4 year run were Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Neil Simon and Danny Simon. Woody Allen and Larry Gelbart of MASH fame wrote for Sid's follow up show Caesar's Hour. If you have no clue at all what I am talking about, and that would be understandable given that Your Show of Shows was live and there is not a lot of tape on it, go watch the 1982 flick My Favorite Year. Norman Steinberg wrote screenplays for Mel Brooks and he wrote My Favorite Year as a tribute to Brooks favorite year 1953, when he worked as a writer for Your Show of Shows. I don't remember if the iconic gag line about that group of writers is in the movie or not so I won't spoil it but I will say that the influence of Your Show of Shows extended at least as far as John Cleese and A Fish Called Wanda. RIP Sid Caesar, I wish they'd saved more of the tapes of your show.
