I haven't posted much of anything in the Baseball Forum this year, because the demise of the Mets has so utterly depressed me, and I've been overseas, making it harder to follow the team. That being said, the Mets have surpassed expectations by just a little bit, and are at least semi-respectable. Regardless though, the Madoff situation hangs over the team, and it's just so frustrating.

With that in mind, I thought this column was really good. Should the Mets trade Reyes? I really hope not. He's my favorite Met, and I think it's worth trying to resign him, especially since we're sort of-kind of in contention right now. But I don't know, and I think the question is a good lens to look at the team through. Because I don't think I've ever followed a team in limbo like this, and I think Reyes represents that better than anybody. Where do people stand on the Reyes debate?

In my opinion yes , as expressed elsehwere i don't want them to but if they can get 2 GOOD prospects and a decent backup OF then we pull the trigger

Oh and keep the faith we are having a tickertape when we reach .500

Why waste his prime years in one of the toughest divisions in baseball? By the time the Mets will have built up enough and the Phils and Braves dipped enough, Reyes will be entering the twilight of his career. Sell high and reap the rewards.

Everyone points to the Teixeira deal and how Texas got Andrus, Feliz, Saltalamacchia and a couple of pitchers. If the Mets can get a package 80% of that, I think you pull the trigger. Speed guys rarely age well and Reyes already has an extensive injury history.

I'm no big baseball fan but FWIW:

Trade Reyes, Beltran, Wright, and K-Rod if you can while the returns are high. Keep Ike Davis and build around all the prospects and money you will retain. The Mets need to start from scratch so they're better off getting heaps of young talent to work with.

Sure, the next three years will suck but it'll be worth it when the Mets are stocked with young talent for the following decade.

    Keep Reyes.

If we're going to trade anyone out of Reyes and Wright, it should be Wright. I love Beltran and appreciate all he's done for us but he needs to be traded at the deadline if possible.

Of course we want him. You're not touching my pitchers in the bigs right now, and Butler better stay. But after that, all yours.

Beltron as a rental is a good move, his contract years are his best. I agree k-rod is all smoke and mirrors and the league knows it.

I would make Reyes a very fair offer behind the sceens if he balks trade him. I would say 5 years at 20mil each is more than fair.

Why would you pay him that much money when you are no going to be a pennant contender for at least 3-5 years? Cough him up, get a huge ransom, contend that much sooner. He is having the best possible year to ellicit a huge deal from someone a player or 2 away.

Because IMO the Mets are a culture change away from competing in the near future. I think they need a Rex Ryan type influence to turn it around. That and two top of the rotation type starters and their lineup is good enough.

Look at San Fran last year. They had a much poorer lineup and won it all.

trade him. overrated as fuck, and i've been saying that for 6+ years

Injury prone, not clutch/he's choker (we need to purge the scum of our 2007/2008 choke squad who underperformed), and not a very high on base percentage.
That initial contract we signed him to was fine all things considered, and he was a bargain the first couple of years, but given our financial woes we need to spend money in the right places

get some good prospects and rebuild this entire team. keep wright, santana and the younger guys (including pelfrey, albeit not as a #1 or #2. he's a #3 type guy)

I would be extremely disappointed if he was traded. I really want him back. He is leading the NL in hits, doubles, triples, and stolen bases.

SF also had the best pitching staff in MLB, the Mets do not, nor do they have best lineup.

You're right, the Mets are a culture change away. And that change has already begun, in Sandy Alderson. But that change is going to take several years to complete, and will require rebuilding with what you have. Biggest asset? Reyes. Having a good SS will not win you a pennant. Using that asset to acquire a few good young pitchers and a position player will help you much more.

Now, Wright will be out for a while with a stress fracture in his back.

If the Mets trade Wright, they will lose A LOT of their fanbase. Trade a franchise player in the middle of his contract? Citi Field will be empty for the next 4 years.
