Hey so far it's been a decent year. we're 4-4 in a rebuilding year that most of us thought would mean a 6 win year. My question now with the season half over is,Should Mangini play Clemens in 06'. I'm not talking about N.E or Chicago but should he get some reps. I have no illusions of a Playoff year this year. I'm thinking about 07' and beyond. I would like to see Clemens in some games to evaluate him and see what he can do under game pressure.Chad is a known commodity but Kellen could be something special. Please post your comments on Clemens playing this year. Is it worth the bad press that Mangini might get in playing the rookie.

I think this question has to be answered after the NE and Bears games. If the Jets at that time are still "realistically" in a playoff hunt, you would have to stay with Chad. If they are 4 and 6 after 10 games and Chad's arm looks tired, it would make much sense to see what Clemons can do in game conditions.

I'd like to see him get some reps but you don't want to risk putting the guy in where it's going to compromise his development.

Also consider the fact that we're at 4-4 right now and that folks have yet to give up on this season, so unless Chad's shoulder falls off, or if he has another collapse similar to this week's, I think that hill run with command for the better part of this season.

I don't think Chad will be replaced this year at all and I doubt Clemens will see any meaningful playing time until his next contract unless Chad gets hurt again. Mangini will stick with Chad and probably make grooming the next gen QB last on his list of priorities.

It wouldn't surprise me if Chad isn't re-signed long term either. Just a raw feeling right now but I could see it happening.

You bring up a dilemma, kind of a Catch 22. Here's Chad who renegotiated and supposedly took a huge paycut of $6M this year. However with bonus clauses involving TD passses and playing time he has and most likely make most of that $6M back. Let's say Chad isn't bought back in 07' hasn't Mangini set his program back by not playing Clemens at all in 06'?

Bit of a sticky wicket isn't it? :)

It all hinges on what the long term plan is at the QB spot and that of course, will depend on Chad's long term resurgence/contract. We've all seen the Good Chad and the Bad Chad this year. We still don't know exactly what we have in Clemens but unless this team fall so far out of contention that we're looking up at the Dolphins from the basement, Clemens doesn't play.

Keep in mind Mangini I'm sure would prefer his first year as HC be judged as a successful effort. That's why you never hear the dreaded "rebuilding" term come from Hofstra although we all know it is what it is. If Bad Chad shows up again, you might see Clemens in mop up duty or if Chad is getting smoked all day long. Other than that? Fuggeddaboutit..

i agree. If and only if we are out of the playoff picture. But that's not gonna happen, right?

I love how last week everyone is talking playoffs and how Chad has carried us all season, and after a loss people are talking about putting Clemens in for the rest of the season.

Learn to have perspective and not say dumb things like this

We're 4-4. Whether you say a playoff run is unrealistic or delusional (you're probably right), Mangini won't, can't, and shouldn't. You play the players who give you the best chance of winning. Clemens is a rookie 2nd round pick, and Chad has been good for us pretty much all season and has earned the right to play until we're out of contention.

Ask me again when we're at 7 losses, and show me how Chad performed in the games til that point and then I might say it's Clemens time.

Only in the 4th quarter of blowout wins.

While I have been concerned about Chad's performance the past three games he's the team's best chance to win.

If Chad looks downright putrid come December, it wouldn't hurt. However, if Chad's going good, he should still be in there even if the Jets are out of the playoffs.

The way Chad has played most of the time this year don't be suprised when he comes back next year. Mangini is very high on Chad's decision making and the way he handles the O. The only way Clemens plays this year is during a blow out or through injury. Clemens will sit behind Chad for another year or two!

Have to consider what the Gaints did with Eli and Warner and that's seemed to work out extremely well for everyone other than Kurt.

Well I think around the league no matter what occurs from here on out Man 1st season is consider a success. If we spent a #2 draft choice this year on KC then its Man & co responsibility to play him to see what he can do in a live game situations. If he shows he can do it then maybe we can trade Penny for a hi draft choice cause he is consider a "top" tier QB & for sure will make some team a pretty good backup at the least cause he just to defenseable as a starting QB at least IMHO.

That's a pretty positive post, someone slip you happy pills this morning?

I think Chad deserves the chance to prove he can play 16 games without getting hurt. Anyone still wincing with every hit?

I truly believe between New England's and the Bear's defense Chad will not survive! He's going to get blasted all day and we might see Clemens sooner then people think .I Personally would like Chad to play out the year and bring us to the playoff's but I'm not so sure now. Brad smith would be the other option but all his plays were option plays.

The unfortuate thing in this debate there are so few here who do not want to look ahead or cannot look ahead to understand what is being said here. Somebody posted until we are no longer in the PO pix should we play KC another said when we reach 8 losses so they are grasping at straws that this team can both make the POs & win the SB I guess.

If you've been watching the games, the pass protection is pretty good. I imainge that the Pats and Bears will have a gameplan similar to JAX. Stop the run and play coverage. Since those teams can get pressure with their front 3/4, they will most likely not blitz all that much.

If the Jets lose the next two Clemens has to play. Clemens or some other Qb is the future of the Franchise not Chad. We have to find out what to do in the draft and F/a regarding a Qb. Chad is a good guy but he will not be the Qb that will take us to the promised land. He needs to go someplace else to be surrounded by Vets who are ready to win. He has to go to team like the 05 Steelers or 03 Buc's where all he has to do is not mess up and let the team take him to the promised land.

So if he doesn't beat the 2 best teams in the NFL, it's time to bench him? Do you people even remember your expection before the season? You would've been creaming your pants if we were 4-4 right now...but instead you bought into the hype that we were good enough to make the playoffs, so now because you were dumb enough to buy into the hype, Chad should be benched because we're not 5-3? We'd be at best 2-6 right now without Chad and probably more like 1-7.
