I think what really killed us this season was the complete lack of a running game. We finished ranked about 23rd in running which is pathetic by any standard. A lot of people will point at Mark Sanchez and yes hes played pretty bad at times this season but in 2009 and 2010 our rushing attack was ranked 1st and 3rd respectively and it offset Sanchez's terrible play those years. This year believe it or not Sanchez is better then 09 and 10 but we have no rushing game whatsoever to compliment. Our running game finished this season looking like this: att / yds / yards per / longest / TD's Shonn Greene 253 1054 4.2 31 6 LaDainian Tomlinson 75 280 3.7 20 1 Joe McKnight 43 134 3.1 11 0 Mark Sanchez 37 103 2.8 25 6 John Conner 13 44 3.4 13 1 Bilal Powell 13 21 1.6 6 0 Jeremy Kerley 5 28 5.6 16 0 Santonio Holmes 3 27 9.0 23 0 Antonio Cromartie 1 1 1.0 1 0 As our full time running back Greene BARELY broke 1000 yards for the season with a longest run of just 31 which is pretty bad. Even Reggie Bush finished with more yards AND touchdowns. We severely need a great running back this offseason so we can get back to running the ball effectively minimizing the mistakes Sanchez tends to make when we force him to throw the ball too much. As much as I like Shonn Greene he is not a starter and does well in his role as a change of pace back. /rant or if you don't feel like reading all of this, we need a damn running back.
First year as a full starter. Kid did great give him the rock still and bring back LT for another year... He's shown he has improved his pass catching... I think he is good
Why our running game sucked: 1) Wayne Hunter sucks. 2) Wayne Hunter sucks. 3) No deep passes/threat. 4) Wayne Hunter sucks. 5) We could use an explosive back that can break long runs.
Wayne Hunter sucks in pass protection but don't give me that shit when it comes to run blocking, that's one thing he does well. The kid just doesn't have the speed to scare anyone nor the size to offset the fact that he doesn't have breakaway speed, and can he break some goddamn tackles please.
Wayne Hunter is not a good run blocker at all. We went from one of the best run blocking RT's in the league to one of the worst.
LT should not be brought back. McKnight will take his role and Powell will get more time. Greene will get the chance to run behind a better line.
I like what Montee Ball could bring to the backfeild. McKnight=Speedster (tosses, sweeps, zone) keep him outside of the tackles. Shonne= our power back (Blasts, counters, dives, zone) Powell= ?. from the little time I saw him he seemed to "tippy toe" at the line. From what I have seen of Montee Ball (4-5 games last year and 7-8 this year, including the Rose Bowl) he looks likt the real deal. Remindes me of a bigger Ray Rice. Thoughts
dbrick had his worst year since rookie mangold had his worst year since rookie slauson was solid for the most part - not elite moore was ok in the running game (awesom in pass pro) hunter was among league worst in everything mulligan is a joke connor is overrated keller cant block long range pass game scared no one and was worst in the league what do u expect from the rb?
bingo! we all saw what the line really was when mangold was injured. blame shotty , ryan, and sanchez as much as you want, but the majority of the blame goes to TANNENBAUM! having him and bradway handling the draft makes me most nervous of all.
Running game relies on blocking. So does the passing game. OL did not do well run or pass blocking hence both looked poor. Plus lack of run game makes passing game tougher, and lack of passing game makes running tougher. Bottom line is it falls on the OL and they just did not play well enough of the time.
the line sucking had a large impact on our run game. but, if we're really going to be a ground and pound team.. we need an elite back. not just one that will run through holes and take what's given, but a guy who can break off large gains on his own merit. i like greene but i think we've seen enough to know that he's not really that guy.
