The NY Daily News is reporting that Jeremy Shockey has been traded to the New Orleans Saints... Details are still coming
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/8...ckey-to-Saints If its a 2009 2nd round pick, how can that happen if the Jets have the right to a 2nd rounder if Vilma becomes a stud for NO? Must be a 2010 2nd rounder and a 2009 5th round pick.
I heard it was for a 2nd and a 5th in 09.... weird that the Saints waited this long to pull the trigger. But they got Shockey and avoided giving up picks this year. I really wonder if the fact the Jets selecting Keller at #30 put the trade off as long as it did.

In February, the Jets traded linebacker Jonathan Vilma to the Saints for a conditional fourth-round draft pick. It was reported at the time that if Vilma reached certain playing-time incentives and signed a contract extension with New Orleans, the Jets would instead receive a second-round or a third-round pick in 2009. Now that second-round pick seems to have been sent to the Giants The league may need to step in on this to approve it
Saints acquire Shockey for draft picks By BRETT MARTEL, AP Sports Writer AP - Jul 21, 4:11 pm EDT NFL Gallery NEW ORLEANS (AP)?Jeremy Shockey was traded to the Saints for two draft picks Monday, giving New Orleans a disgruntled star tight end who watched from the sideline while injured as the New York Giants surged to the Super Bowl title. The Giants will get second- and fifth-round picks in the 2009 draft. The deal must be approved by the league and is contingent on Shockey passing a physical. Shockey, a four-time Pro Bowl selection who spent six seasons with the Giants, broke his leg against the Washington Redskins on Dec. 16. He is known for his offensive ability more than his blocking, and was unhappy even before the injury?he was asked to block in addition to catch. Once hurt, he didn?t like the fact that much was made of the Giants winning with rookie Kevin Boss in his place. Shockey had 371 catches for 4,228 yards and 27 touchdowns with the Giants. He was drafted out of Miami with the 14th overall pick in the 2002 draft and became the Rookie of the Year. The Saints have been seeking a tight end who is more of a downfield threat than starter Eric Johnson, who caught 48 passes for 378 yards last year.
It's good for the Saints that the deal was made now as opposed to prior to the draft. It's also good that they did not have to deal Roman Harper. Harper was rumored to be a part of the proposed trade in the spring. The Giants hurt themselves by making the deal at this time. The 2nd round pick in 2009 should be a worse pick than what the Giants would have received this past April because the Saints will probably have a better record in 2008 than they did in 2007. The trade will help the Saints so long as Shockey is healthy. Eric Johnson was too sloppy last year and just isn't good enough. Drew Brees has a chance to put up huge numbers again, especially if Robert Meachem shows up this year and the RBs stay healthy.
great trade for the Giants. They're better without Shockey anyway, and now they get draft picks too! Second rounders are extremely valuable. Giants waited and waited and then soaked 'em anyway.
I don't think the Saints will have much trouble winning their conference this year. Maybe the Cowboys will contend with them for the NFC crown, I can't really think of anyone else.
Brees is going to be an awesome fantasy player this year, with addition of Shockey. Probabally 3rd best fantasy qb
The trade between the Giants and Saints for Shockey is for 2009 2nd and 5th rounders. That is unless Vilma plays 85 % of the defensive snaps and signs a contract extension before the end of the season. If that happens, Jets would get the Saints 2nd round draft pick. But in turn, the Giants would get the Saints 1st round pick for 2009, instead of 2nd and 5th round.
