St. Petersburg Times writer Rick Stroud reported on ESPN's First Take that the Lions will look to trade Shaun Rogers. The Detroit Free Press has confirmed via a source that Rogers will not be brought back in 2008. Rogers can be a dominant force inside, but the Lions are clearly frustrated by his failure to stay consistently productive and in shape. If the Lions can't deal him, Rogers is expected to be released. Detroit should be able to get a first-day pick for the 28-year-old, but probably not a first-rounder. Jan. 23 - 11:06 am et. He will be 29yrs old in March 2008. 6'4" 345lbs. Played in a 4-3 D in Detroit. Based on size alone, he should play NT. Has a pretty fat contract -- 2008: $4,250,000, 2009: $5,250,000, 2010: $7,000,000. Not sure if all he needs is a change of scenery. The "clearly frustrated by his failure to stay consistently productive and in shape" makes me nervous, but then again they said s--t about Randy Moss too. Not sure if trading Vilma to Detroit for him is as good an idea as trading Vilma someplace for a 2nd round pick.
Trading Vilma for a guy who didn't play NT in a 3-4, and would be traded because of his "failure to stay consistently productive and in shape."??? I don't get it...
despite his size, i don?t think he?s a good fit for the 34. He?s not a guy, that works his ass of in the middle, taking on double teams and holding his ground. i pass
They may just release him or trade him for a conditional draft pick. Now that everyone knows the Lions don't want him they have no leverage I doubt they'll get what they want. And I don't see how he will stay with the team after they stated publicly they think he is lazy.
Really? That is not what I saw in the Lion games I watched this year. He certainly commanded a double-team most of the time (and didn't get pushed 3-yards downfield. I am not saying that is the only ingredient to the 3-4 NT position, but it certainly would be a big step forward for the Jets D-line.
of course he can take on double teams (he wouldn?t play NT in this league if he couldn?t), but he tries to make the play rather than taking care of his responsabilities.
Tradign Vilma period is a bad idea unless we are getting a proven playmaker. Giving away a Pro Bowler for a pick that may or may not ever be productive and will almost surely not be as good as Jon is just plain stupid. If you won a $10,000 lottery, would you spend all the money on tickets for a $10,000,000 lottery?
this guy is def a beast but i dont think we should take another shot on a guy who isnt familiar with playing in a 3-4. I especially dont think we give up Vilma for a long shot.
When you refer to Jonathan Vilma as a Pro-Bowler, please put it in the proper context. He is a Pro-Bowler playing the MLB position in the 4-3 w/300+lb DTs in front of him. I love the guy just as much as you do, but he is simply not fit for the ILB position in the 3-4 D. And this CS is playing the 3-4 D whether you & I like it or not. He was average at BEST at the ILB position in 2006 and even dropped off in the 2007 season.
With those kind of salaries this is not a wise trade. I'd love to get Rogers and give him a shot, but at more reasonable rates.
Agreed. If Detroit releases him before anyone grabs him, I'd be more than glad to sign him for a more reasonable price.
He's definitely worth a try...but not at the cost of Vilma's value, although I'm not sure what that is following his injury (2nd-ish). I wouldn't be too deterred by the "lazy" label used to describe almost every NT over 340 lbs. Bears gotta hibernate sometime.
We should just offer them DRob straight up. Isn't Donnie Henderson the DC there? I don't know if that's a fair trade or not I haven't really seen much of Rogers the past two seasons but I'm pretty sure he could play the 34 NT and play it well. DRob is pretty much useless for us at this point, he proved he cannot anchor the 34.
I'm not going to hop on the "Shaun Rogers is too lazy, and hasn't been a 3-4 NT, therefore he sucks" bandwagon here... While trading Vilma for him would be against our better judgement, Rogers looks to me like the kind of guy who could become a very good NT so long as his workload is not over the top. Make him the #1 guy in a 2 or 3 man NT rotation, and keep him fresh, and Rogers is as good as there is at demanding a double team and creating a legitimate push... The complaint that he is "lazy" is a ridiculous one. As anyone who's ever stepped on the field with a 300+ pound defensive tackle can attest to, if he were NOT lazy, there would be something wrong... The offensive linemen tend to have bigger frames, and thus play closer to their 'natural weight,' whereas defensive linemen often carry a LOT of extra fat on their bones to add the weight necessary to do their jobs.... A 340 pound man with a sizable gut is not going to be a ball of energy, that's all there is to it... If I can get 2 or 3 good snaps out of every 4 out of a 340 lb nose tackle, I'm happy... If we could somehow make a good deal for him, I'd love to welcome him aboard....
It's hard to tell if Shaun Rogers would make it as a 3-4 nose but if I had a dime for every big-bodied NT candidate I've seen called 'lazy' in the offseason and then go on to have success in the 3-4 for some team then... I'd probably have a couple of bucks. I'd be more concerned with whether or not we can coach him up to the NT position, and that is out the window until our DC situation is resolved.
I feel that no one may pick him up until he is released, then teams will take a flyer on him. With a reputable DC i feel he can be coached to take on the run stuffing NT role that this team so desperately need.
