One of the things I hate about doing a mock is trying to justify player A falling to XXX position. So I'm cheating a little on my mock. I'm using Fanspeaks draft simulator and using, in this case, the CBS board for the draft to use for ratings.

Only one trade present, I traded down in the 3rd and picked up an additional 4th.
Not a sexy draft, but I'd be fairly happy with it.

I won't argue, but it's why I went with a simulator and ran straight up. It's cheating a little but it takes the 'well, so and so falls because I say he does.'.

Fan Speak seems to always have a lot of good players fall. I did one myself with the bpa philosophy (cbs board) and no trades. I think I did ok, what do you think?

I like Su'a but he's too small to stay at 3-4 OLB. He might be a 4-3 only LB in the NFL.

Really solid IMHO. I don't know much about the first RB you drafted by the rest of the draft looked good to me.

I think it really depends on how you use him. He's a high motor guy, or at least seems that way to me, so that's a huge plus. I don't see him as a traditional 3-4 LB but remember the Jets play a lot of 4-3 fronts as well plus he's a guy you can move around a little bit to keep the defensive scheme camouflaged. He can be moved inside, outside, even a more Strong safety role. In a Rex Ryan defense I'd agree, he'd be a poor fit. But in the scheme the Jets run, I think Bowles and company would make excellent use of his talents.

Ok thanks, 68. I didn't get to watch a whole lot of the Jets outside the Browns game this year so I was thinking in terms of the old scheme. He definitely could be used as a nickel backer, I'm just not sure that's worth a second round pick.

Not talking a nickle back, when you bring in nickel players you're tipping your hand. What you want are fast versatile players that you can move around and confuse an offense on any down without tipping your hand.

After seeing who you passed on I absolutely hate your mock draft. You passed on a franchise RB, a possible QB of the future and several top OLB in the first to take a solid OL. I know it's a trend to hate our OL but they put up good numbers last year and certainly outperformed their talent level. Plus Mac said he likes picking OL in middle rounds and develop them. Since you have the pro version, I think the smart move would have been to move up 5 spots in the second and grab Floyd. He's 100x better than Cravens (who I do like but in the third). You took another OL in the third which would be alright if you didn't already grab one in the first. In doing so you passed up a couple solid ILB which is a position of need. You passed on a top 3 TE in the 4th to grab ANOTHER OL and then you finish the draft with another project QB. Do you really think Sudfeld would even make the Roster over Geno and Petty?

In conclusion if this was our draft I'd start a petition to get Izdik back.

I don't think Fanspeak is very realistic at all, but this would be a pretty good draft, depending upon how you see Decker. Do you see him as a future LT or only as an upgrade at RT? I think he only projects to RT, but would be a definite upgrade over Giacomini and could start immediately. I don't know much about Cravens other than he's pretty speedy, and small for a 3-4 OLB. Like CleveSteve, round 2 might be too high for a nickle LB unless Bowles plans on playing a lot more 4-3 alignments or a lot more nickel looks.

I think Nick Martin probably goes in the 2nd round, but would be a great value, if not a steal in the 3rd round. Similarly, I think Drango probably goes in at least the 3rd round, and probably the 2nd. He would be a steal in the 4th. I'd love those two picks, and with Decker our OL would take a huge step forward if all three developed as expected.

Carroo has talent, but has some off-field character issues, so not sure I'd want him, and doubt if Mac would take him, even at the bottom of the 4th round. Green would be a pretty good addition in the 5th round.

I'm not that high on Sudfeld and would rather add a punter at that point. FA punters are expensive and rarely that good. There's a reason why they aren't re-signed by their former club. The only sensible way to upgrade the punter position is via the draft. More and more teams draft their punters and one can't count on signing a UDFA any more and getting a quality punter.

Depending upon what moves were made in FA with regards to the OLB and TE positions, this could definitely help the Jets. If nothing else it should upgrade our OL considerably, although Martin probably would see little action unless he beat out Drango at RG. At least we'd have Mangold's eventual replacement in hand, however, and he'd probably see some action.

I agree Fanspeak may not be overly realistic, but since it does base it's draft off the bigboard you select early on then the 'realism' varies depending on the reliability of the bigboard you select. Currently CBS has many prospects I really like ranked lower than where I think they should go. And I do think, like most simulators, it goes a little more towards need than BPA than most NFL teams do, especially in rounds 1-3.

Carroo I took because of his talent and that low in the draft, with the extra pick I gained, worst case if he causes any waves he could be cut with no real pain, High risk High reward with minimal investment, no real downside in that scenario.
I agree on taking a punter instead of a QB in the 7th, I just frankly have absolutely no feel for the punters in this years draft.

On area I disagree on is as Sua being a nickel LB. I see him as basically a 3 down LB who you can move around to disguise looks, especially if you have a 'meaty' OLB/DE on the other side. Like I said in an earlier post in a Rex Ryan defense he's a non fit, but I think the group of Bowles and company would make very good use of his versatility and motor.

Honestly I don't know if Decker will be a LT or RT, he's got the physicals to be a LT IMHO but he needs some coaching up to be a LT and needs to refine his technique.

regarding the OL situation, yes they put up good 'numbers' last year. But with it's an old line and getting to the age where injuries are more frequent and play level begins to decline, often rapidly.
QB of the future, Sorry, I'm not using a 1st round pick on a risky QB. There's only one QB, maybe 2, IMHO that justify a first round pick and neither of them were on the board, nor will be on the board, at #20.

I'm not mad you didn't draft a qb in the first, I got mine in the second. I'm commenting on the fact that you dedicated 3 of the first 4 picks on a group that still has a couple good years left and is deeper than people like to admit while ignoring some top flight players in positions that we actually are thin in like RB, ILB and TE.

The TE class in this years draft is very weak, so yes I ignored it early on. ILB, there are really only two that I really like in this draft, Scooby III and Dominique Alexander. Actually let me rephrase that, there are only two that I like that would be available in a place I could have justified taking them. I was going to draft Alexander in the third but elected to trade down and instead took Martin. I love Mangold but his game is starting to slip, getting his eventual replacement in the fold and ready for a year or two down the line is just smart football, especially for the value a that point (2nd round talent in the bottom of the third? too good of value to pass up, even if it's not an immediate need, BPA.
RB's, You could argue that I should have taken Elliott in the first, but RB's have too short of a shelf life and to big of a bust area to use a first round pick on IMHO, you can easily get elite RB's later in the draft and I love Green.

Just curious how you can see who he passed on in his draft.

I disagree with you regarding our OL. Brick is on his last legs and needs to be replaced sooner rather than later. Carpenter is solid. Mangold is solid, but getting more brittle, and his play is tailing off a little. The play at RG fell off when Winters started playing. Giacomini is pretty awful. The OL's stats were deceptive because Fitz makes quick decisions and gets the ball out quickly and because Ivory got so many yards after first contact. Another year older, Brick's, Mangold's and Giacomini's play should be worse than last year, not better. Winters is younger, but who cares? He just needs to be replaced with someone better.

If you click the link I provided it shows the entire draft, not just who I selected, so you can see who was on the board when I selected. I'm getting a lot of heat for my OT selection in the first round but he is generally considered one of the top 3 or 4 OT's in this years draft and there's a fairly substantial drop off after him, IMHO. Yes there are some guys, Like Jerald Hawkins, that have a high potential but they also have substantial bust factors. (This is coming from someone who really likes Hawkins but I recognize that while he has a high ceiling he also has a very low floor.

Well this draft would certainly fix the OL woes........however not very likely the draft goes like this for several reasons.....aside from the fact Mac has stated he's not a big fan of drafting OL early ( could be a smoke screen ) 3 OL in the first 4 picks is a bit extreme in regards to salary cap ramifications. For instance Martin can easily slide over to RG for the next 2-3 years until Mangold is finished. There are some scouts who claims Decker is best suited for RT. Which is fine considering Breno is awful. But eventually D'Brick has to be replaced and that will be another high selection - probably 2017. As far as OLB goes I'm not a fan of Cravens although that is a matter of opinion....I don't think Aaron Green will last until round 5 - but if he does that would be a good value pick.

I'm thinking a OT is signed in FA - probably to replace Breno - along with a LB and RB. This doesn't mean the same positions won't be targeted in the draft as the Jets can use several of each.

I personally like to wait until the FA period is over to do mock drafts.....

Jets are interested in Carroo and he's one of the top WRs in the class.

The incident at Rutgers was bad from PR standpoint because Rutgers is a circus, but he does not have character issues

well of course FA period could change the picture dramatically, but this is pre free agent period. While Mac may have stated OL not being drafted early is not a preference LT is the generally an exception to the rule, especially when you're drafting lower in the order. as I've stated earlier Decker is a tweener between LT and RT, he has the physic and attributes to be a LT but his current technique is a RT. It really depends on whether his technique can be coached up or not.

I decided to run another sim, this time using Draftek's big board...They REALLY are ice cold on some of what I consider to be top flight prospects. Yes I did execute two trades in the process. I traded a future 2nd and a future 5th.
I think Draftek really really rates some players too low so this is, even by my standards, an extremely unlikely draft. But it's a draft that I really, REALLY, like.
    http://fanspeak.com/ontheclock/sharedraft.php?d=zwgyvo

20: R1P20 DE NOAH SPENCE, EA. KENTUCKY - This is a no brainer, Spence could actually fall in the draft depending on his interviews. He fills a need nicely, if he doesn't get suspended. He's a monster, he's BPA, and he fills a need at OLB.
51: R2P20 OT GERMAIN IFEDI TEXAS A&M - Ifedi could drop, I actually wanted Jerald Hawkins, but he went at #18 in the 2nd. Ifedi has first round talent, arguably top 5. But he's inconsistent and gets lazy, a little risky I admit but worst case scenario he's a RT, best case scenario he gets coached up and buys in and becomes a top flight LT...
65: R3P2 OLB SU'A CRAVENS USC - Some consider him a nickle LB, or a 4-3 LB, I see him as someone the Jets coaching staff can make 3 down use of, especially with spence on the other side. He can cover, play safety, play the run, rush the passer.
83: R3P20 C NICK MARTIN NOTRE DAME - None of the boards seem to like Martin, fine by me. He's a bargain here. Though I was going to draft ILB Dominque Alexander here but he went the pick before my pick. I thought, really really hard, about taking Vonn Bell (S) here and in retrospect I probably should have taken him, he's an awesome safety. To be honest I flipped a coin.
100: R4P1 G SPENCER DRANGO BAYLOR - Again Drango fell, and honestly I just couldn't pass him up, he's the 2nd player I got from trading a future 2nd, Cravens was the first. I wasn't going to go OL here but I couldnt' talk myself out of the value.
119: R4P20 ILB SCOOBY WRIGHT ARIZONA - Scooby was my fallback ILB, I considered Tyler Matakevich but like Scooby better. I also thought very long and very hard about taking a WR here, but ILB is such a need and Scooby's a very good player.
141: R5P2 QB CHRISTIAN HACKENBERG PENN STATE - I had assumed him to be gone by the 2nd or 3rd round. When I saw him still on the board I figured what the hell. I probably should have taken Lawler but Hackenberg is an excellent choice for a pocket passing developmental QB, in the 5th round the risk is minimal and he has an arm.
157: R5P18 DT JOSH TUPOU COLORADO - I love this kid, He may never be A great NT, but he's got a shot down the road with some development.
196: R6P18 RB AARON GREEN TCU - Draftek really hates green, he's not a between the tackles runner but he's got good hands and he can be electric when in space.
220: R7P1 P TOM HACKETT UTAH - Jets need a punter and after doing extensive research on punters in the class I think's he's the top tater :D
239: R7P20 CB FABIAN MOREAU UCLA = final jets pick. This would be a potential steal in the 7th. Good cover guy with size and plays physical. Lost the season with a foot injury. while he plays the ball well he doesn't turn many in to picks.

unlikely draft, mostly posting it this time to give a run down and description of how I view some players. I don't think I'll use draftek again though, I disagree with their rankings a lot.
