NFL teams have until Saturday, August 30th to get down to their final 53 man rosters. Jets currently sit at 75 players. That means 22 players get cut. Your predictions and thoughts.
Erik Ainge(IR or PS) David Ball Larry Brakins Rudy Burgess Jehuu Caulcrick Amhad Carroll Kyle Devan Buba Franks James Ihebidigo Thomas Johnson Bryan Mattison Blair Phillips Ropati Pitoitua Paul Raymond Brandon Renkart AJ Schable Cameron Worrell Cody Spencer Kenwin Cummings
they will not cut bubba franks. they likely will not cut a. carroll. they may not cut cody spencer. Any chance Dearth is cut -- no need for five tight ends. I hate using a roster spot for a long-snapper. Teach someone else to snap already!
The only reason you may be right about Franks is because of his relationship with Favre. I don't think that is enough of a reason to keep the TE with the least potential of the bunch. They will not release Dearth, outside of favre he may be the guy in the locker room with the most job security. When you find someone who can long snap reliably the way Dearth has you keep him forever.
I agree with your comment regarding Franks -- his relationship with Favre is key to his making the team. Franks is also a nice red zone presence. Your comment regarding Dearth is non-responsive. I understand that Dearth is a quality long-snapper. I don't understand why the coaching staff can't teach another tight end to long snap, thus opening a roster spot.
No, they won't cut him because they just signed him. It would look foolish. He is most definitely safe.
The fact that he was just signed this past offseason will have no impact whether he stays or goes, the Favre connection I can buy but even that seems a bit far fetched to me. They signed him before they drafted Keller for not all that much money. One of the TEs is going to have to go, they cannot keep 5 TEs on the roster, its either Franks or Pociask who has more potential.
...I could see schable or brakins on the PS but I would think you keep and develop Ainge........:wink:
Cummings and Franks make the roster PS Ainge Caulcrick Mattison Pitoitua Raymond Renkart Schable Ihebidigo
This is what I expect the 53 man roster to look like: QB Brett Favre QB Kellen Clemens QB Brett Ratliff QB Erik Ainge HB Thomas Jones HB Leon Washington HB Jesse Chatman FB Tony Richardson FB Jason Pocsiak WR Laveraneus Coles WR Jerricho Cotchery WR Brad Smith WR Chansi Stuckey WR Wallace Wright WR Marcus Henry WR David Clowney TE Chris Baker TE Bubba Franks TE Dustin Keller OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson OT Damian Woody OT Nate Garner OG Alan Faneca OG Brandon Moore OG Jacob Bender C Nick Mangold DE Shaun Ellis DE Kenyon Coleman DE CJ Mosley DE Mike DeVitto NT Kris Jenkins NT Sione Pouha OLB Calvin Pace OLB Bryan Thomas OLB Vernon Gholston OLB Marques Murrell ILB David Harris ILB Eric Barton ILB David Bowens ILB Matt Chatham CB Darrelle Revis CB Dwight Lowery CB Hank Poteat CB Justin Miller CB Drew Coleman FS Kerry Rhodes FS David Barrett SS Eric Smith SS Abram Elam K Mike Nugent P Ben Graham LS James Dearth OL Will Montgomery OR Matt McChesney
Unfortunately, it will. It's really 4 TEs and they pretty much have hinted they will keep all 4. They don't count Dearth as a TE.
Franks will probably get at least one season to prove himself. With Keller emerging though, I don't believe that chance will be very long lived.
...I could see schable or brakins on the PS but I would think you keep and develop Ainge........ ya Ainge would make a mean clipboarder
With the amount of priority on which STs is placed with this team, I don't think it's even a possibility that Dearth is cut. Westhoff loved him, and Westhoff always had the ear of both Edwards and Mangini and got what he wanted personnel-wise, even when it came to drafting a kicker and a kick returner with second round picks.
Long-snappers are not easy to find, and tougher to make. Otherwise, what you are suggesting would be the norm, instead of the scarce exception around the League.
