Sean McVay has apparently hit his peak in LA with the Rams. He's talking about stepping aside to regain some energy next season. The networks will likely offer him a job but he is unlikely to want that job for long. The last time a young head coach was this accomplished and also apparently ready to change teams was in 1970 when Don Shula left the Baltimore Colts to take over the Fins in the merger season. The Colts were awarded a 1st round pick as tampering compensation after Shula signed with the Fins. It's going to take a big deal to get the Rams to part with McVay's rights since they have him locked up through 2026 however I think the team that does this and gives McVay full control could well profit to a similar extent that the Fins did with Shula. He's 36 years old and he's already won a Super Bowl. He's an offensive minded head coach. He's the kind of guy who might be great even in the metro area market for a couple of decades.
He is an offense specialist and seems like a smart guy. In other words, can’t see him being interested in coming to a franchise renowned for its inability to to ever EVER develop a QB or stable offensive line. And with a buffoon of an owner.
Weird that he is stepping away at such a young age. I get the grind aspect of it, especially in todays game, and that he just got married and all, but 6 years and burnt out? As reported he probably wants some of that Amazon money to talk football and work a ton less. don't blame him, but his window might have closed after this year. Should have done it last season.
The Rams have no 1st round pick. That's a good starting point for a trade. Obviously a team needs to get the Rams permission to talk to McVay before making a deal to see if he is willing to make the move.
McVay talked about retiring after they won the Super Bowl, as did Aaron Donald. This year the Rams played like they were being coached by someone who’d rather be elsewhere. He already made the mistake of coming back when he obviously didn’t want to and won’t do it again. He should have walked when he wouldn’t have had a contract to worry about if he chose to come back. He’s definitely gone now and I doubt he coaches again anytime soon.
"I think the team that does this and gives McVay full control could well profit to a similar extent that the Fins did with Shula." Sign this Beast! ..especially if Harbaugh and Payton not available Full Control? Sounds good to me..Woody needs to grow some balls and brain to make this happen! Because Woody is always in desperation mode he is an easy Mark for Grifters like Joe Douglas..talking him into a 6 year stay lmao..What rookie GM routinely gets that??
The rookie GM that is smart enough to know you don’t risk your GM career on the Jets without a significant amount of job security given back to you. McVay won’t be back in football for 3-4 years. That’s more than enough time for Joe Douglas to turn us into a winner or Woody to give McVay full organizational control when he wants to return. Hire him to be your GM and I don’t think compensation is due to the Rams if he decides to coach since he’s technically been given a greater role than his Rams deal.
Compensation will be due based on the fact that McVay's contract, which runs until '26, will keep tolling over as long as he is away from football. The way I'd frame the offer to McVay (after talking to the Rams and getting permission) is that the job we're offering is unprecedented for a 36 year old guy. We're offering him full control to build the football operation and guaranteeing the first 5 years of the job. We'd like him to head coach with a caddy GM and staff of his choosing. He'll have full personnel control and will have control of the cap based on his caddy GM hire. We're willing to pay him $100M guaranteed over the first 5 years of the deal. We'll give him a $20M bonus each year the Jets win the Super Bowl. He'll be joining the team with the longest active streak of failing to make the playoffs in the NFL. The glory of getting us over the top would clearly put him in the NFL Hall of Fame coupled with his SB win with the Rams. He'd be the first NFL head coach to win Super Bowls with two teams. Assuming he was intrigued enough with the offer I'd give the Rams 2 1st round picks, this years and next years, to make the deal. They've been short 1st round picks for awhile and they could definitely use the reinforcements. This of course coupled with the fact that McVay does not want to coach them any longer.
I wouldn't offer him just to coach. That's the point. I'd offer him to be the guy running the football side, including coaching. I might even put in a clause where if he wins a Super Bowl he can step upstairs and run the team from there or move back and forth or whatever he wants to do. I'm interested in the Don Shula experience for the Jets.
Ah, you're referring to his time in Tampa when he inherited one of the greatest defenses of last 25 years.........and then left the franchise in ruin. I was referring to his second glorious stint with the Raiders
I'd take the Super Bowl. And Gruden wasn't 36 when he went to either the Bucs or returned to the Raiders.
