Sources: Schwartz to coach Lions The Detroit Lions have reached an agreement in principle with Jim Schwartz to become their next head coach, several sources told ESPN on Thursday. Schwartz, the Tennessee Titans' defensive coordinator for the past eight seasons, has agreed in principle to a four-yeal contract. On Tuesday, after a second interview with the Lions, Schwartz said the chance to coach the NFL's first 0-16 team motivated him to tackle it and succeed in it. "I don't shy away from a challenge," Schwartz said earlier this week. The Lions fired Rod Marinelli after his team made history. Schwartz just finished his 10th season with the Titans. Before being hired in Tennessee, Schwartz spent three years on the Baltimore Ravens' staff. He also was a college and pro scout for the Cleveland Browns and that experience might be valuable in Detroit. The Lions have the No. 1 pick in April, along with first- and third-round picks from the Dallas Cowboys, and need to find players to spark a turnaround. Among other things, the Lions will be counting on Schwartz to come up with ways to improve a defense that ranked last in the league and gave up 517 points -- threatening the NFL record for points allowed (533) in a season set by the 1981 Baltimore Colts. ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen, ESPN NFL reporter Michael Smith and The Associated Press contributed to this story. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3835911 Poor Bastard...
Shwartz is Lions New HC What a great pick I think he will do a good job, he has learned from an excellent coach in Fisher
because its the Lions, I have a wierd feeling it may not work out. but i hope i'm wrong.... if he wins 4 games next year, he's a genius.
Good luck to Shwartz maybe if they win 1 game he will win coach of the year because thats a big improvement from last year.
...Matt Millen's gone. Plus, they already have the most talented receiver in the game - Calvin Johnson. It sucks that he's wasting away with that awful franchise.
They lost alot of close games, and I'm sure Schwartz will be able to coach them up enough to correct those costly mistakes. Alot of picks helps with the turnaround as well, and they'll probably get Kitna back too who is, no matter how you look at it, better than Orlovsky. I could see a 4-12 peak out of them.
Yeah, it does suck. So you think Calvin Johnson has surpassed Andre Johnson already? Wasn't this last year only Calvin's second? Because I would otherwise say that Andre Johnson is the most talented receiver in the league. Just imagine . . . Calvin Johnson with a quarterback and a running game. I get chills just thinking about it.
