NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Raiders head coach Art Shell will be fired after the season. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is a candidate to step in as the team's head coach in 2007.
Art Shell will end his NFL head coaching career where it began- in the Meadowlands against the Jets. The Jets should be able to win this time.
I kind of feel sorry for Shell, but not sorry enough not to hope that the Jets kick the hell out of the Raiders. TBTF
After the way he will lose to the Jets he wont be the Raiders head coach when he comes to congratulate Mangini in mid field.
If Romeo Crennel also gets fired, this could prove a bad image for the league. Two black coaches getting tossed after one year. This after an offseason when only two black head coaches filled spots in nine vacancies. I know what the response is - if they did a better job, they'd still be coaching. But it still looks bad for the NFL
Crennel would be after two years, not one. I am still leaning to him not getting fired, but it is difficult to defend a 10-20 record (with 2 games to go). The Art Shell hiring was so ridiculous, and Shell looks so brain dead out there, that there will probably be less complaining about it than there might have been otherwise.
Shell has looked horrible and I don't doubt that he will leave. Crennel took over one of the worst drafting franchises in the last decade, so I'd give him more than 2 years to right the ship. They did seem better/competitive this year for the most part. He'd only have 2 more years to get it going if I were in charge though and that means a lot!
I assume that you're talking about Crennel. There was a lot of speculation about the Jets going after him earlier in the year (assuming the Browns fired him), when the run defense looked so horrible. They look better now, so I don't know if there is as much of a push to dump Sutton as there once was. I would be very surprised if he went to the college ranks - he's been an NFL coach for 25 years, and I think it's pretty clear that that is where he wants to be.
