As far as the Steelers are concerned, Santonio Holmes is gone but definitely not forgotten.

The big-play wideout and Super Bowl XLIII MVP was acquired by the Jets in the offseason at the fire-sale price of a fifth-round pick after the Steelers tired of Holmes' off-field incidents.

Pittsburgh opened training camp yesterday, and receiver Hines Ward said Holmes' departure was both unfortunate and potentially harmful to the Steelers' playoff chances.

"I just hate that it had to end on that note," Ward said of Holmes' unceremonious trade to the Jets. "He's still a great talent and a great kid who got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. He made some bad decisions, but what player doesn't?"

Holmes will miss the first four regular-season games for the Jets, and Ward is convinced that will change Holmes' attitude.

"I think that, by ending the way it did, it's a humbling experience for him," Ward said. "It let Santonio know that you're never bigger than the game. I think he's a changed guy, and I look for him to have a productive career."

Ward said Holmes, who is in the final year of his contract, also has another reason to keep his nose clean as a member of Gang Green.

"He's still waiting to get that big payday," Ward said with a laugh. "He'll be on his best behavior."

How dire is the Steelers' offensive-line situation after Willie Colon's season-ending Achilles tendon injury?

Well-traveled Jets draft pick Adrian Jones is in the mix to start at right tackle. That would be the same Jones who was mulling an offer from the United Football League until the Steelers called last month.

"I'm looking at it as a fresh start, a chance to show people that I can still play," Jones said.

Ward said he thinks the AFC North rival Bengals are playing with fire by adding Terrell Owens to the mix with Chad Ochocinco and noted head case Antonio Bryant.

"T.O., Antonio and Chad? I feel for Carson [Palmer, quarterback]," Ward said. "We'll see how Carson handles that."
