I was wondering earlier about him and decided to check a few stats. Why do the Jets use him as a number one receiver. Also, with his height and weight wouldn't he be better used as a Y reciever? With no practice today I figured this could be a convivial discussion. Please use facts to back up your statements, not opinions. Debate Question: Should Santonio Holmes be a number 1 reciever?
I think there is a difference between being a "number one receiver" and being a "most targeted receiver." I agree that he isn't necessarily the best deep threat guy, and that's typically who your most targeted/number one guy is, but he isn't a bad short pass guy (on paper). If we're having a run-heavy offense having a short gain guy as your #1 isn't really an issue, IMO, as, theoretically, you won't need to be throwing on 2nd/3rd and long. I see Holmes as a good short yard guy mostly doing crossing routes, Hill has the speed to be our deep threat and Chaz has the size to fill a role similar to the one Plax filled last year. Kerley is mostly a slot guy, mostly crossing routes. I've been lamenting our receiving core for awhile so I'm not saying that it's a great combination of guys but I think that's the idea for the types of roles they will play and, on paper, it kind of makes sense. Unfortunately football isn't played on paper so we'll have to see how that works out for them.
Holmes is a number 2 reciever on most teams. On the Jets he is their prized possesion. Tanny blew it big time giving Holmes a big contract. Holmes - after all the turmoil to end last season - comes into camp out of shape and then blames the new fast pace of the offense for it. I don't like Holmes one bit. I hope this is his last season in green and white.
Wwhen it comes to football decision-making, I'll take the Steelers over the Jets everytime. There's a reason they gave him to us for a 5th rounder
Holmes needs a biger reciever to accompany his ability. He NEEDS a big, fast, deep threat to "take the top off" the defense so he can run the deep in, and deep post patterns like he did with Pitt. This is when tone is at his best. Without that other reciever (Plax was not that guy, Braylon was) Holmes full value will never be reached. Problem is the Jets paid him to be the #1 without the "other guy" last year. The HOPE is that Hill/Chaz can be the guy Braylon was to him in 2010. If not, we will see another frustrating year for Holmes...
Santonio Holmes will NEVER be a Y. If he goes across the middle, any LB will gleefully crush him. He does fit better as a flanker (Z), than split end (X). I don't even know if that is the terminology Jets use in their offense however; they run E/P system, not Coryell system.
Fucking Jerk. Well at least he got the team fired up against Pittsburgh. Well that was more Sanchez - if anyone saw that Wired Up episode. In Philly he was a straight up dick, asshole ruins two potential TD drives
Hines Ward wasn't the prototypical X in that regard, but he was very physical, and drew double coverage pretty often - which is what X is supposed to do.
in 08 Nate Washington took the top off the D and averaged like 16YPC. Ward had 81 catches and over 1,000 yards. Point is Holmes NEEDS help to be the most effectieve; he is not a #1
I don't know about that, most targeted is probably not the deep guy, but the slot guy, ala Wes Welker...unless you have an all-world talent like Calvin or Larry.
so it was nate washington, who tone is easily faster than, that was taking the tops off of defenses in pitt ... interesting and let me get this staight, tone is a better player when his teammates are better? groundbreaking stuff, do tell more
Well fair enough, that's kind of what I was going for though. He's not both a most targeted and deep threat like Calvin or Larry. Most targeted though, I have no problem with. Just people expecting him to be one of those top guys in the leauge: he's not. But that doesn't mean he can't be your most targeted guy.
People people people....i understand that holmes is a pain in the ass and really shit the bed last year, but lets not forget this is a superbowl MVP we're talking about that played great for us in 2010. He is a playmaker, no doubt. He's very good at making things happen after the catch when in open space. He may not be a big deep threat, but thats why they drafted Hill. Just because you're not a deep threat doesn't mean you're not a #1. Yes, I miss Bray Bray too, but even when he was here Santonio was the better receiver...they went together very nicely. Hopefully Hill will help him similarly. What really killed their WR corps last year was that Plax wasn't able to run ANY deep routes.
No Need to be a douche; douche! DO you think we have a problem at receiver; or the potential for one? All I am saying is that Holmes is not capable of being the “guy” in this offense by himself (see last years results with 2 washed up vets and a rookie slot man). So yes genius; he does need some PROVEN help to be the guy we paid #1 money for (the help he received in PITT). He is not capable of being a true #1 by himself (like he got paid to be, and no I don’t blame him for taking the $) and like Larry, Andre, Calvin, Brandon, Greg, Dez, Hakeem, Reggie, VJAX, Marques (should I keep going) are. SO is Chaz the answer? Who knows. Is Hill the Answer? Again a rookie, who knows (I think he can be, but it ill take time). Douche
Were you really expecting to have a serious discussion about Holmes without all the darksiders coming out of the wood works and bashing the guy blindly? The guy was a superbowl MVP and played a big part in our biggest playoff win in recent history. He is clear #1 and has won games for us. Stop with the nonsense. 2010 he only played 12 games and 2011 the whole offense was weak. He'll be fine this year, especially with a running game and deep threat to keep the defense from double and tripling him every play.
