    The same old whining ?
    By Rich Cimini

I'm not sure if this interests anybody, but there's a member of the media -- actually, I'd call him a peripheral media type, not an actual journalist -- who seems rather annoyed by the phrase "Same Old Jets."

This person uses his web site to advance his personal agenda, and went so far as to call out another media member by name in one of Rex Ryan's news conferences. This person, coming off as a fifth grader, asked Ryan to comment on how WFAN's Joe Benigno allegedly "poisons" the minds of his listeners by invoking the "Same old Jets" refrain.

The question was out of place, an embarrassment to journalism, but this is a person who is more obsessed with who is reporting the news and how they're reporting than actually breaking his own news for his 12 or 13 subscribers. To his credit, Ryan handled the misguided question wonderfully.

"We've got to do something to get that changed," Ryan said. "I don't believe it, the 'Same old Jets.' My 'Same old Jets' would be my dad, who won the Super Bowl. I'll sign up for that. If you want to go back to karma, let's go for that."

Does "Same old Jets" still have a place in the lexicon of Jets fans and journalists who cover the Jets? Absolutely. Here's an e-mail I received after the Jets' overtime loss to the Bills:

"... After this most recent performance, I don?t know anyone who wasn?t thinking 'Same Old Jets.' Being a Jets fan for over 25 years, it seems as if the 'must win/should win' games are almost a lock to end in heartbreak...(Signed) A frustrated Jets fan."

History (good and bad) matters when covering sports. Does a loss from 1994 affect the 2009 season? Of course not, but as journalists, it's often our job to cover teams through the prism of history. History was a big part of the story when the Rangers finally won the Stanley Cup again. It made the victory even sweeter. History is a big part of the Chicago Cubs' plight. And history (positive history) is, and always will be, part of the Yankees' story.

So, yes, the "Same old Jets" still exist because it's woven into the fabric of the franchise's culture and the fan base -- the people who read our articles. It's understandable if Jets fans see it as demeaning, but they haven't won a championship in 40 years. I think most fans get it -- except, of course, one particular fan masquerading as a journalist.

I've been trying to figure out who the person that asked Rex about Benigno was.

I've always wondered who that guy is. Hutchenson and this guy usually ask the most questions during the press conferences

This is great!! I didn't think Rich actually read his email!! I'm proud to get a quote...here is the entire email that I sent him, like it or not.

    Rich,

I wanted to commend you on the most recent blog that you posted today on the "Jets Stream". I find it refreshing that a beat writer for the Jets can take such an unbiased opinion, yet be so directly related to the team. I'm sure it's difficult to write from the heart, and report exactly what you see, knowing that you'll be in contact with the team on a day to day basis. But after this most recent performance, I don't know anyone who wasn't thinking "Same Old Jets". Being a Jets fan for over 25 years, it seems as if the "must win/should win" games are almost a lock to end in heartbreak. Thanks for continuously supplying us with inside news, and saying exactly what each and every Jets fan wants say, if we had the forum in which to be heard. Keep up the great work!!

    Frustrated Jets Fan

What a claim to fame! Quoted in a blog written by the great Rich Cimini. But seriously, that's pretty cool.

I was impressed with Ryan's reply to the SOJ question. While i don't agree with him, I don't think that he could have come up with a better answer. Hopefully he'll come up with answers that are just as good for solving our passing woes.

OH COME ON!! I'm not trying to claim anything...just thought it was fun to share that some moron from TGG.com could get some air time. More importantly, it shows you that Rich actually reads his email, so don't be shy to send him exactly what you think. That was my main point.

personally i cant stand the term same old jets. it lacks any substance, players change every year... coaches change every few... the only thing that is the same is the fans and the ownership.

if you wanted to call it same old leon... or same old woody you may be onto something but the idea of same old jets is really just silly.

Know how you stop the "Same Ole Jets" mantra? Win! Its that simple. When you do something different then you always do, as you have done in your history, as Cimini points out, then you are not the "Same Ole". Simple, aint it.

even 5 consecutive years of playoff football would shut them the fuck up.

Beningo does poison the fans. Its a poison phrase, it gets in peoples heads, it makes them scared of success.

I know that this team is now looking at a 8 win season, and i'm ready to look at a lot of games as either toss ups or losses, but i'm not putting my head in the sand, wishing this was a bad dream. I'll do that when this team turns into the Bucs of the 80s or the Lions of forever.

There is a rookie QB and HC that needs my fearless support.

I'm not a "fishbowl fan", who thinks that only in Jets World does this shit happen. Try being an Eagles fan, seeing NFC championship game after another and getting your heart broken. But Eagles fans are delusional douchebags.

But the real jets of old had a larger than life QB, a HC and defensive staff that wasn't scared of anyone, a WR that could stretch the field at any moment. More than one talented RB, a possession receiver who was beyond reliable, and a defense that raped everyone.

this team, on paper, is the baby version of those guys, they need to grow. But this baby version needs to stay healthy as well.

The phrase "same old Jets" is there to get Jets fans riled up, no more, no less, beating down the downtrodden, even for a so called self proclaimed fan like Beningo, who should go back to stocking supermarket shelves.

It isn't "framing a story in history" as Cimini rationalizes his continued and thinly veiled dislike for the franchise. It's much more like Fatcessa busting chops on Mets and Jets fans. He does it and hides. Why write this without naming his target? Coward.... name your target pussy. He took someone over the cials (whther Leberfield deserved it or not) but then holds his head high being better than thou because he disn't name Leberfield? What a coward.

They're going to be the Same Old Jets until they're not. That's kind of elemental to the whole conversation at this point. I liked Ryan's answer also.

Hopefully someday soon we will be saying same ol Jets after their 3rd SB in five years. Then that phrase could have a good meaning instead of a bad one. Just a dream but that would be cool.

"Same old Jets" is reserved for REAL Jets fans.... not people who get paid to repeat it on the air or in print. WE pay to watch the team. THEY get paid to watch the team. If I could, in my fantasy world, rub some skid marked underwear into Benningo and Cimini's faces without getting arrested.... I would.

I didn't mean that, it was a sort of sarcastic addition to your post. I actually don't think that I would be comfortable having my email quoted by cimini, but congrats to you. Considering that he probably gets dozens if not hundreds of emails, you'd must have stuck out somehow.

SOJ is a phrased used to sum up what has almost become same result each year. Flying start followed by collapse, December collapses, making scrub QBs look like superstars, losing to bottom of the barrel teams, somehow losing when the game looks like it's locked up, high expectations followed by a crap year, etc.

We all know it and see it each year. That's why SOJ continues to live on. Not because Benigno or any other media person say it. I don't care if someone never listens to sports radio, if you're a NY Jets fan, you know what Same Old Jets means and you will always hear Jets fans use it as long as they continue how they are.
