William Moore...Patrick Chung...Courtney Greene... Theres a few more, but I'll let the college season even that one out.
My top 5: 1. Taylor Mays: USC 2. William Moore: Mizzou 3. Rashad Johnson: Bama 4. Patrick Chung: Oregon 5. Nic Harris: Oklahoma (might get converted to linebacker in the pros) Sleepers: 1. Anthony Scirrotto: Penn State - he'll fall due to character issues 2. Trimane Goddard: UNC - health problems 3. Anthony Reddick: Miami (FL) - supposed to be the U's next great safety, but can't stay healthy
Will Moore is the best but i would settle for Chung or Peagues.Mays is overrated he has Sean Taylor like size but doesnt make alot plays.
Mays makes a ton of plays at USC. He's all over the place. He doesn't pick many balls off because no one throws near him. He's also a huge force against the run. He led USC with INTs as a freshman. Sean Taylor size? Mays is so much bigger. He's 6'3 240 and runs a 4.25 40 yard dash...he's the fastest player on a team that is arguably the fasest in the nation. He's a freakish athlete. You can call him a workout warrior after these stats, but this kid has a 40+ inch vert and did 25+ reps of 225. Combined with his dominant 40 time, he should be a top 5 pick. Mays will be a star at the next level.
I didnt say he wasnt good im just sayin he's overrated hell everyone on USC is overrated i like the team but its the truth.Im just sayin he's no Sean Taylor which alot of people have been comparin him to the big fast safety type.
I haven't seen Mays play too much but all i've heard about him is how he is overrated and a workout warrior.
If your looking for a pure playmaker from the safety spot then Mays probably isn't your man. However, I've seen him play a lot over the last few years and I honestly can't remember one time that he got beat deep....hell, I can't even think of one time he got beat period. I'm not sure if I've ever even seen a team throw at him since he's been at USC. It'll be interesting to see how he develops over the next couple of years. He's a pretty smart guy and I can almost guarantee you that he will stay for his senior year. Right now he's playing across from Kevin Ellison who is about as aggressive as you can get from the safety position. Mays covers a lot for him so it'll be pretty revealing to see how Mays performs next year, considering he will probably be involved in more blitz packages and brought closer to the line of scrimmage with Ellison leaving.
if Myron Rolle from FSU declares early. hes playing SS at FSU but has the skills and athleticism to move over to FS. good size at 6ft 2 , 218. not blazing speed but one thing this kid is, and as cliche as its become hes a smart. beyond dedicated and has amazing ball skills. not to mention hes a phenomonal open field tackler. was the number 1 athlete and defensive back, 7th overall prospect coming out of HS. And hes a jersey boy for whoever that matters to. 06:First Team Freshman All American and ACC DROY. played in 12 of 13 games and started the final 10. finished 3rd on the team in tackles 77 (5.5 TFL) (mind you this was when they had ernie sims and buster davis dominating the LB core) 07:ACC All Academic team. 67 tackles and a FF this guy is a prototype and the kind of player who i believe can contribute immediately. the guy lays the wood and is as consistent of a tackler as ive seen from a DB in quite some time. the only knock i have on him is he doesnt make alot of picks but he rarely ever gets thrown on deep. probably why. if not hes busy in run defense. look for ALOT of scouts to drool over him come draft .
Personally, both Mays and Rolle are two of the most overrated players in the draft. I'll believe that 240 weight and 4.25 40 of Mays' when I see it. Even then, he's nowhere near the safety prospect Sean Taylor was. I don't think there'll be a safety prospect like Taylor for a very, very long time. Those numbers have been everywhere but a really, reliable concrete source. NFLDraftScout has him at 230 and 4.52, which at least seems reasonable. Rolle hopefully sticks to medicine. He's a Roy Williams clone. If you want someone to look at on the FSU D look for Everette Brown. Actually, watch their whole front 7. Eddawg, great call on Chancellor. He's not afraid to help out in the run game, can hit, and also can cover. He and Macho Harris are 2 more talented DBs from VT.
theres no way mays runs a 4.25 at 240 which he isnt i mean think about thats just physically impossible, Mays is 230 by the way.Idk maybe he is great in coverage but he is no playmaker. At the safety spot the best "playmaker " would probably be Moore in my opinion
i think your wrong about Rolle but we'll see. I'm an FSU fan so consider me bias, but we'll wait and see. FSU has always had a great D, the offense was just held hostage under jeff bowden and theirs now the transition of Jimbo Fisher installing his LSU offense here. not to mention Weatherford and Lee being two of the biggest qb recruit busts in recent history. good thing EJ Manuel is redshirting. i think hes gonna be good. but yeah their d.... Everette Brown is a monster, Budd Thacker is a complete animal at NT. Nigel Bradham is a true freshman beast, Markus White and Justin Mincey at DL. FSU's always had legit LB'ers but since Broderick Bunkley left theyve had a young group and theyre finally coming into their own as a unit.
I live in LA and watch some SC football on the tube, Taylor Mays is the real deal, one of the few SC players to be underrated rather than overrated since PC took over. Monster hits and he does all the other stuff too. Like a Roy Williams except he can cover and be a complete DB.
Vernon Davis ran a 4.38 40 at 250 pounds. That was physically impossible until he did it... Mays was electronically clocked at 4.32. Look it up. He's also registered at 4.25 by USC, and has been named the Trojans' fastest player.
I said it before, we don?t need another playmaker at S. We already got Rhodes. What we is a coversaftey, that can play the deep ball over the top and help the CBs and has a good feeling for when to come down to support the LBs in the lowhole. This way, we can free up Rhodes to be all over the place. If we can maybe find a convertet CB with good instincts or a solid coversaftey in the 3rd or 4th, we?re set.
Dunta Robinson from Houston will be a free agent. He could easily make the switch from corner to free safety. I'd honestly like to see our FO grab some solid, PROVEN, veteran free agents on both sides of the ball next season.
Morgan Burnett, Georgia Tech He is only a true sophmore so not for 08 draft but the kid is the best safety I have seen. and GT has three guys starting in the NFL at safety.
oooo *rubs hands together* I'd love to get Dunta in either a CB or S role. Does everyone remember the buzz around here when he was drafted? If I remember correctly, he was the consensus, but those damn Texans nabbed him, and we went with Vilma.
I dont think Dunta wants to play safety he said so in an article to bad since he's played it most of his life. Here's a quote from him “Nah, I’m a corner,” Robinson said. “We’re going to kill all those stories right now. I like playing safety. I played it most of my life, until my junior year in college. But I’m a corner now, that’s it. I didn’t come into this league to play safety, at least not yet. Ten, 11 years down the line, maybe.”
