I'd love to hear what Walt Michaels has to say about what happened to cause his firing. His tirade about the Raiders was a classic too. I always felt his firing set the team back five years when they had some of the best talent in the league. SB XXI would've been a Jets- Giants affair if Lance Mehl hadn't blown out his knee late in the season.
I'm curious, what caused the Jets to go downhill so fast in the late 80-mid 90s after being so good for a large part of the 80s?
From what I've heard, Jim Kensil had come to work for the Jets out of the NFL offices prior to the start of the season, and during the flight home from the AFC Championship loss (the famous tarp game), a drunken Walt Michaels laid into Kensil for what he perceived to be a slight towards the Jets by his league office friends for allowing Shula to not take care of the field that week. As if Kensil was a traitor of some sort. Might have come to blows.
That was the story we all read. The book supposedly has an interview with Walt. Maybe we'll hear his side after all these years.
Maybe they will also discuss the decision to take Kenny O'brien over Dan Marino. I would really like to know the thinking behind that.
Just finished Rex's book, started "100 things...", with "The gang green" on deck. This one will definitely be read as well. Win or lose those 80's Jets were my fondest memories as a fan. Kob,Toon,Freeman, Wesley... It's also about time the sack exchange got some REAL coverage and retrospect.
Poor drafting starting in the early 80's pure and simple. Lam Jones,Bob Crable,Russell Carter, Ron Faurot, Mike Haight, Dave Cadigan, Roger Vick, Jeffe Lageman, Blair Thomas, Johnny Mitchell. A couple of nice players there, but all were #1 picks and none were ever considered stars. They hit with Freeman Mc Neil, Ken O'Brien and Al Toon. The drafts of the late 70's stocked the team for their 80's run (Todd, Buttle, Klecko, Powell, Walker, Ward, Lyons, Gastineau) but the talent level of the team dwindled as the decade wore on and wasn't effectively replenished until free agency opened up in 1993.
