According to this article in today's sidebar links: https://www.ganggreennation.com/201...fensive-system-breakdown-establishing-the-run says that Todd Bowles wants to have a "run first" offense. Meanwhile most of the NFL has some version of "QB Friendly", meaning pass-first according to this article. If you believe in "run first", as Bowles does, you can convince yourself of its merits and how well it can work. But there is a hitch: If you depend on establishing a running game in order to get your passing game going, what happens when the other team drops 3 or more score on you and you're forced into a passing, catch up, mode? Where is your running game then? Of course if you have an outstanding defense that prevents that scenario from happening, it isn't an issue, but the Jets don't have kind of defense. IDK, maybe it'll work, but from what they've shown so far, it won't. While the rest of the league becomes more and more pass-centric, the Jets are stuck in 1980s mode and think they can still make Ground & Pound work. I'll believe it when I see it.
By the time we're done, Football will be played with a round ball.. This is sound outside the box thinking on Bowles' part. In a passing league, who would expect the GnP? We'll shock the world!
Hence the Jets need to address the offensive line, I hope it's prioritized ... I felt the play action pass was non-existent last season. Would like to see a stronger run game and more balance myself. Dropping back 50 times won't win you titles. Hell, the Eagles had 23 run attempts to 43 pass attempts, but we don't know how many of those pass attempts were RPOs.
The top 5 rushing teams in the NFL in 2017 made the playoffs last year, with the number 4 team winning the SB. Running the ball is still important in the NFL, what teams need is a good passing game as well. I have no problems with the jets becoming a top ten rushing team, however they still need to address the passing aspect of their offense. They need both a top ten passing and rushing offense to be a consistent playoff team, Mac needs to fix the oline as that will allow time for a QB and open holes for the RBs. So far jets have failed at addressing the oline, QB and RB spots with long term successful solutions hence why they have gone 5-11 these last couple of years. If they continue to go with JAG as their starters at QB, RB and oline, expect another 5-11 year. Time to get some skilled players at RB, and Oline to help out any potential young QB they draft.
I actually called this over a month ago and was written off. as far as "run first" goes there is nothing wrong with it. the thing in the NFL is if you do anything well enough it works. you just need to do it well. Jax is a prime example of a run first team that dominated and almost made the SB. Minnesota was as well even with cook out. No wasn't run first per se but they used a lot of the RBs in short passes. their 2 RBs accounted for over 3k total yards combined.
By run first, Bowles means run on first down. Then run on second down. Then throw incomplete on 3rd and 9.
Well if the Jets draft a QB this year, you can pretty much guarantee they will be very run heavy. It makes sense for a rookie, but if it's Cousins they will probably pass more often. It's anybody's guess at this point. It never hurts to have a good running game. It's especially crucial down the stretch. I say draft a QB + Center and sign somebody like Carlos Hyde.
I sometimes hope that Jets players or coaches read this board. This message has to be emailed to Bowles imo. Very well said. Post of the week in my eyes.
Who is he throwing to? By week 3, Anderson will be behind bars, Enunwa will have snapped all his ligaments and Devin Smith will be delivering pizzas.
Well have hope. I want Cousins because he is a Top 12 QB in this league. I want Barkley because he a Jets fan just like us. 15 or so days to go. We will find out soon enough.
