This is now becoming a serious, serious problem. Ranked 31st in the league against the run. What is going on? Really. Where is Bell, Landry - guys that were brought in to help against the run? Did anyone notice Landry was out for a few plays - supposedly out of it? Most of the teams we play from here on are all up there in Run Offense. Colts 19. New England 3. (twice) Miami 8. Seattle 7. Rams 22. Arizona 31 (our best match up now that williams is out as well) Jaguars 18. Titans 30. (still have a top RB) San Diego 16. Buffalo 5. 3 of the top 10 run offenses are in our own division.
Actually, minus the one big one to Foster, the D did pretty good against the run tonight, especially in the second half.
The run D played much better last night than it had for the rest of the season for the most part but fell into a few spurts where they were getting gashed again. Hopefully they're starting to correct the problem. Any word on Ellis?
The Run D has always had the "minus the big run...". Feels as though we are giving up too many of those big runs. McIntyre got burned again last night, just as he did by Kaepernick 2 games ago. Wasn't the purpose of Landry and Bell to help in the run game though? this is atrocious.
And other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?? That run was 50 yards. The Jets gave up over 160 yards rushing. And last time I checked, that big one to Foster counted and came in a big spot when the defense could have pinned the Texans inside the 5 yard line.
Tthe "big run" was 46 yards. Think someone was out of position right from the start. But, Arian ended up with 152 yards rushing for the night. That long play was actually 46 yards, at least according to the stats. Foster had 29 carries in total. So, that would be 106 yards on 28 carries, for an avg of 3.78 YPC. Checking NFL.com rushing defense stats shows that Denver and Dallas are tied for 11th in the league at 3.8 ypc and San Diego is 10th at 3.7 ypc.
They seem to be back in the secondary more...the one play they were up was the play action Touch Down to Owens where Cro looked confused
They still suffer routinely from not being able to set an edge. Pace to me is the worst culprit of this. But this same issue existed last year as well. Drives me nuts.
I do not disagree with you - in that they played better. They will need to play much much better. I mean, they were getting burned when Rex would run bear 46 fronts. That is what really drives me crazy. Does anyone know what happened to Landry though? Why he was sitting on the bench, reports say he looked "out of it".
Saw an article that said it was a misunderstanding. Rex took him out and wanted to give him a bit of a breather, just a couple of plays, and Landry thought that he was being replaced.
I have Donald Brown (Colts) on my fantasy bench and Matt Forte is on a bye week. Looks like an easy decision.
Pettines schemes suck. They gave up the long runs because they had the LB's crashing the wrong gaps and getting stuck. Pace looks like a big scarecrow out there.
That's been the problem all year ... huge breakdowns from time to time in the run defense that go for huge gains. These have really skewed the stats. I know it sounds silly, and I know they all count ... but aside from those handfull of long gainers, I think the run defense has been decent from down to down. I think giving up chunks of yards on every run would be much more damaging and much more demoralizing than what we're doing now ... givng up one or two big plays and 30 small ones.
The Jets have now given up 860 yards on the ground in 5 games. They are on a pace to give up 2,752 yards on the ground this season. The breakdown for yards allowed is: Buffalo - 195 Pittsburgh - 66 Miami - 185 SF - 245 Houston - 169 The Jets have not allowed fewer than 169 yards on the ground to any team that had it's #1 RB available for the game. This suggests that they are probably going to allow closer to 3,000 yards rushing than the 2,752 they are headed for right now. Note that the Jets will be a historically bad defense by the end of the season if this occurs. In 2003 the Jets allowed 2,294 yards rushing to finish 28th against the run. In 2005 they allowed 2,185 yards rushing to finish 29th against the run. In 2007 the Jets allowed 2,156 yards on the ground to finish 29th against the run. Those are the worst team performances against the run for the Jets in the decade post-Parcells. This year's team is going to obliterate those teams ineptitude against the run at the rate things are going.
I am not sure I understand what you are saying. How do long runs skew stats? Its math and statistics. You have lows and you have extremes, the JETS just have a lot more extremes than most teams. At the end of the day it all pans out mathematically. You can't say on 1 hand, the run defense has been decent from down to down, but on the other hand they give up big chunks of yards on a few downs. That is the text book definition of a poor run defense.
Who was that really HUGE NoseTackle Rex put in to stop Foster on that third and short in the second half? The announcers said he was a rookie but man, he looked like a young Kris Jenkins out there.
