NEVER draft a player on his....potential. Only what you see. Cant remember who said that exactly, but its logic to stand by.
Whoever said that must have been in the NBA or maybe MLB, not the NFL. I disagree and so do most NFL teams. You don't draft players for where they are their rookie season. You draft them for what you think they will be when they develop. That's why they think about floor vs ceiling. If they were strictly drafting players for where they are now, floor and ceiling wouldn't even be considerations.
Certainly not the NYJ who either can't develop the player or who develop him and let him walk after year 4.
depends where you are drafting them. you draft 1st and 2nd rounders for what they prove they have done and can continue to do. you draft 4-7th rounders on potential of what you hope they can do. 3rd rounders you typically look for solid starters. of course there are always exceptions
I know Jimmy Johnson said “hit me with a hammer the next time a draft a dumb player” lol. JJ probably had one of the best eyes for talent when he built that cowboys team.
"In the NFL you get one first-round draft pick if you're lucky. You couldn't really outwork anybody else. In college I could recruit ten players with first-round talent every year." - Nick Saban
